First Christian Church - Disciples of Christ (JCMO)

First Christian Church - Disciples of Christ (JCMO) We are a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one Body of Christ, we welcome They used to say there is "no creed but Christ."

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a community of about 800,000 Christians in 3,800 congregations in the United States and Canada. Two groups of frontier Christians came together in 1832 to form the foundation of today's Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). They shared the view that people should not be excluded from fellowship in the church because they didn't adhere to a particular

human-made creed. Today's Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) still thinks that way. We study the Bible to deepen our connection to God through Jesus Christ, and to discover what God wants us to do. We believe that God is calling the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of the 21st century to be a faithful, growing church that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice. Our mission is to be and to share the good news of Jesus Christ, witnessing, serving and loving from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth. We are devoted to strengthening our congregations for this mission. Some Disciples have liberal views. Others have conservative views. But we share the belief that we are united in our faith that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, the Savior of the World."

In May, FCC volunteers transitioned the Food Pantry Garden from spring to summer plants. Wow, did everything grow fast! Soon, the Food Pantry will begin seeing the first of the summer harvest - tomatoes, cukes, peppers, beans, garlic! Thank you to our hardy May volunteers - Shelley Dawson, Barb Gage, Georgia Griffith, John Kuebler, Becky and Herb Kuhn, Lura McAllister, and Patty Osman.

Community Christian is tending the garden in June, and FCC will take over care again in July. If you’d like to volunteer, look for the sign up calendar which will be posted in the Gathering Area soon. First-time volunteers are always paired with someone who has volunteered before. It’s a great way to give back to our community, and it’s fun!

This week, we're exploring the stories people tell themselves and thinking about how God's larger story might be at work in ways beyond what they can see.

Join FCC for our Community Book Group, where we read books and meet each week to discuss them together. We explore theologically interesting subjects that spark something more in our faith. We meet at FCC on Thursdays 12:30-1:30 p.m. Our next book will be The Sin of Certainty: Why God Desires Our Trust More Than Our Correct Beliefs by Peter Enns. Our first discussion will be on June 18. Discussions will be moderated by Rev. Dr. Michael Dunn. As Disciples of Christ we welcome all to the Table as God has welcomed us.

Do you have a young person in your life who would be interested in attending church camp this summer? Camp gives children and youth the opportunity to step away from the constant demands and distractions of everyday life and spend time in an intentional Christian community. For a week, they build friendships, worship together, laugh together, ask big questions, and discover new things about themselves and about God. They spend time outdoors, try new activities, and experience what it means to belong to a community shaped by grace and care for one another. Contact Rev. Heather for more information.

1 Sam 30-31; 1 Chr 10; Acts 20

2 Sam 3-5; 1 Chr 12; Ps 122; Acts 22

This week brings drama, danger, grief, political maneuvering, and major turning points.

Saul’s story reaches its heartbreaking end while David steps cautiously toward kingship with plenty of conflict, waiting, and hard choices along the way. In Acts, Paul’s ministry sparks revival, riots, miracles, controversy, and some very tense encounters with the crowds.

We’ll read stories of shifting power, divided loyalties, public upheaval, and people trying to follow God in complicated times.
