Dear friends in Christ, we invite you to worship with us again this SUNDAY at St. John’s.

BIBLE STUDY will begin at 9:30AM, followed by WORSHIP at 10AM. Join us in person, or livestream on our website at stjohnslutheranjc.com

We’ll see that Sunday’s Gospel reading—Matthew 18:1-20 is rich in guidance for us:

Humility: Jesus uses a little child to teach us that greatness in the Kingdom of Heaven is dependent upon having childlike trust and humble reception of God’s grace. “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” v.3

Stumbling Blocks: Jesus severely warns against causing “little ones” (believers in Him) to fall into sin. “but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” v.6

The Parable of the Lost Sheep: God, always showing mercy, is constantly seeking straying believers. “For the Son of Man came to save the lost.” v.11

Steps of Christian Correction: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.” v.15. If they refuse to listen, take two or three witnesses. If they still refuse, tell it to the church. If unrepentant, “treat them as a Gentile and tax collector” (excommunication).

Christ’s Presence: Jesus grants the “Office of the Keys” to bind and loose sin, promising that “where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” v.20

Jesus certainly speaks of sin in Matthew’s Gospel, but Jesus never leaves sin as the final word. HE is the final word and the Savior from sin. And though we sin daily, Jesus forgives freely. Thanks be to God for sending His Son, Jesus Christ to conquer sin for us. For in Him, our sins are forgiven!

From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But [Jesus] turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
Matthew 16:21-28

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Then he strictly changed the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
Matthew 16:13-20

As Christians, we can rejoice with certainty that Jesus is the one who has built the church. We can rejoice in the confidence and in the strength of the confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. And rejoice in the blessings that the Lord has given in revealing that to us from heaven itself.

May God grant us this confidence, this wisdom, and this peace by His Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus. Amen.
