Born on June 30, 1917 in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, Lena Mary Calhoun Horne was a dancer, actress, singer, and civil rights activist. Lena Horne's career spanned over 70 years and she appeared in film, television, and theatre. Horne joined the chorus of the Cotton Club at the age of 16 and became a nightclub performer before moving to Hollywood.

Horne advocated for human rights and was at an NAACP rally with Medgar Evers in Jackson, Mississippi, the weekend before he was assassinated. She was at the March on Washington in August 1963 and spoke and performed on behalf of the NAACP, SNCC, and the National Council of Negro Women. She also worked with Eleanor Roosevelt in attempts to pass anti-lynching laws.

Horne later returned to her roots as a nightclub performer and continued to work on television while releasing well-received record albums. She announced her retirement in March 1980, but the next year starred in a one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which ran for more than 300 performances on Broadway. Horne continued recording and performing sporadically into the 1990s, retreating from the public eye in 2000. She died on May 9, 2010.

Horne’s granddaughter is screenwriter Jenny Lumet, daughter of filmmaker Sidney Lumet and Horne’s daughter, Gail. Horne’s great grandson is Jake Cannavale, Jenny’s son with actor Bobby Cannavale.

in 1921, Bessie Coleman became the first Black woman to hold a pilot license. She left a substantial legacy because she modeled a pathway for women and people of color in aviation and her challenges to Jim Crow practices.

Bessie lived a short life, dying at age 34, and her career as a pilot spanned only five years. But her influence has been far-reaching for decades.

We had to know with making this a federal holiday, corporations were going to swoop in and make a run at our dollars.

Don’t be mad, just don’t buy it and spend money with the Black community.

We don’t have to be emotional every time something happens we don’t like. We just need to be strategic and unified.
