Lord, You are a promise-making and promise-keeping God. The covenants You make You have kept throughout all history, including the promise to never leave us nor forsake us. Even when we stray, You seek us out and restore us to the fold. Thank You for such divine faithfulness. And thank You for filling Your Word with example after example of how You have showed up and kept Your promise even when the hour seemed darkness. May these testimonies buoy our faith today. Amen.

How often we excuse little sins that turn out to be not so little. People today balk at the idea that the Lord would banish Adam and Eve from Eden for disobeying His command to not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Yet preciously little time passes from that disobedience to Cain's outright murder. What was true of our ancestors is also true of us. If we give sin any foothold, no matter how small, it will start its corrupting spread and consume us. We must fight it diligently and constantly. As the Lord God warned Cain: "If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."—Genesis 4:7

"Did God really say ...?" With these words, Satan deceived Adam and Eve. And with those same words, Satan tries to deceive today. He comes, the Apostle Paul warns, not as a horned monster but instead masquerading as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). He appears to know God's Word, but changes it subtly to lead people astray. Friends, we must remain spiritually vigilant and look to Jesus as the answer to Satan's lies. For Satan tried to tempt Christ in the same way, distorting God's Word in the wilderness. Yet Christ knew the Word well enough to parry back the devil's lies. So must we. There's simply no excuse not to be in God's Word every day so that we can take it up and fight back the enemy with the real Truth.

Speak, O Lord, and reveal to us the splendor of Your holiness. May we bow down with all the elders and saints and proclaim Your power. May we sing with the heavenly hosts of Your great majesty. Amidst the dreariness of this world, may we never lose the awe-inspiring beauty of Your great grace. Amen.

In the beginning, God created. To many of us, those words are intimately familiar—so familiar that we may skip over some deep truths they communicate. Our God has always existed. At some point, He spoke everything we see—from the tiniest atom molecule to the largest elephant to the farther flung galaxy—into existence out of nothing. And then, He made humans. He did so because He wanted people like you and me to be in relationship with Him. Never let the familiarity of the creation account rob you of that truth: God made you, and He did so with a purpose. Though our sins separate us from Him, the best truth in the Bible is that Jesus Christ's sacrifice restores the original design. "All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation."–2 Corinthians 5:18
