Friends,

We take courage that God is leading us into the future, knowing that God is with us wherever we might go. This message is a constant reminder to the people of God throughout the whole of the Biblical texts. This assurance of God's presence is of great relief in times of uncertainty, in moments where we are not sure about the unknown. But as we gather around the table of the Lord this Sunday, we will hear this message of hope brought forth from both testaments as we go forth one last time.

“Zacchaeus was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he. He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see.” We are familiar with the story and image of Zacchaeus in the tree looking down to catch a glimpse of the man from Galilee. But as we gather this Sunday and turn to Luke's Gospel, we will pass through Jericho with Jesus. Do we find ourselves huddled with the crowds on the ground? Or are we sharing a branch with the chief tax collector?

Earlier this month, the ABCNYS Biennial in Canandaigua explored the idea of what the church looks like two-plus years into the COVID pandemic. Through the lens of the prophet Isaiah, that gathering rallied around the image of the "new thing" that is being perceived. As we gather this Sunday, we will hear a message rooted in this theme, and imagine the "new thing" being perceived in front of us.

Our society is naturally seeking to make the anomalies stand out. Isolate and label them as "outsiders," those things that do not fit with the majority. Even within the life of the church, where we have been called to stand out from the larger society, we still find these anomalies and moments of isolating that which goes against the grain. As we travel along the road between Samaria and Galilee this week, however, we will discover that being the one that stands out yields a different response from Jesus.
