Friends, I wrote a book.

Some of you have heard me circle this for years. It's finished, and it's here.

Grandmama's Soul & Granddaddy's Faith: (Re)-Claiming Black Christian Mysticism.

They told us the herbs were witchcraft. That the dreams meant nothing. That the foreparents were far away and best left alone. What they called superstition wasn't that at all — it just wasn't European.

I pastor a small church. With Michelle I helped build a school that now serves more than 900 children. I see our families from age three to ninety-three, and I have to tell you what I see: something is missing. Our grandparents had it. Our parents half-remembered it. We call it superstition. Which means our children will never have heard of it at all.

Three generations is all it takes to lose a whole spiritual inheritance. We are the generation it disappears on — unless we refuse.

This book argues from Scripture that African American Christianity does not merely permit the ways of our people. It insists on them.

You don't have to choose between the Black church and your deeper inheritance. You never did.
