I love using the Hymnals!!

When we cast aside our copies of hymnals in favor of technology, we lose more than some dusty, old paper.

Something I wanted to share!!
COKESBURY – What started as a simple idea to collect a few pairs of unused and unwanted shoes has rapidly grown into an amazing ministry in Cokesbury, NJ. Soles4Souls, a non-profit social enterprise that creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world, has distributed more than 30 million pairs of new and gently-worn shoes in 127 countries.

A challenge was issued to the small congregation at Cokesbury UMC: each member was asked to donate one pair of their own shoes and one pair of shoes from someone living in a different household.

“There was no defined goal in this collection,” said CUMC member Paul Klitsch, issuer of the challenge. “I thought I’d just put it out there and see what happened. I figured that most people here had shoes in the backs of their closets they forgot about, no longer fit, or just didn’t need anymore; why not put them to good use? My thinking was that if we could collect fifty pairs of shoes, it would be a huge success.”

The challenge was issued in late March, 2018 and shoes started to come in immediately. About a month later, through word of mouth, a connection was made with a local thrift store. Shoes that were donated to the thrift store and were not sold were set aside for the UMC collection.

On Sunday, June 10 at Cokesbury UMC, all 740 pairs that had been collected were placed on the altar in boxes, bags and piles for a special “Blessing of the Shoes” by Pastor Lynn Mears.

“The mountain of shoes on the altar was amazing!” said Mears. “I had to navigate around the heaps just so I could see the congregation. I loved it!”

Then on June 12, the first delivery to the S4S drop off point in Franklin, Sussex County was made. Donations of shoes kept coming in from the congregation and their friends, relatives, co-workers, the community and the thrift store. Less than two months after the June 12 delivery, on August 14, another 840 pairs of shoes made the trip to the collection center in Franklin.

Presently the collection shows no signs of slowing down. An October 24 delivery of 420 pairs of shoes brought the total delivered to 3,635 pairs.

Before delivery, the shoes are matched and rubber-banded. Shoes with laces can be tied together, and placed in large plastic trash bags, as preferred by Soles4Souls workers at the warehouse in Franklin. There, the shoes are graded, sorted and packaged for shipping to Haiti, Honduras, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and many other places around the world where S4S supports micro-enterprise operations. Utilizing the Souls4Souls ‘impact formula’ for shoe donations, the 3,635 pairs donated so far converts into 18,175 meals, or 145 years of shelter for a family, or 121 semesters of education.

In addition, Cokesbury UMC is now listed on the S4S website as a small donation (12 pairs or less) collection site.

Saw this on FB this morning. Loved the message.

Stolen from a dear friend

Church is hard.

Church is hard for the person walking through the doors, afraid of judgement.

Church is hard for the pastor’s family, under the microscope of an entire body.

Church is hard for the prodigal soul returning home, broken and battered by the world.

Church is hard for the girl who looks like she has it all together, but doesn’t.

Church is hard for the couple who fought the entire ride to service.

Church is hard for the single mom, surrounded by couples holding hands, and seemingly perfect families.

Church is hard for the widow and widower with no invitation to lunch after service.

Church is hard for the deacon with an estranged child.

Church is hard for the person singing worship songs, overwhelmed by the weight of the lyrics.

Church is hard for the man insecure in his role as a leader.

Church is hard for the wife who longs to be led by a righteous man.

Church is hard for the nursery volunteer who desperately longs for a baby to love.

Church is hard for the single woman and single man, praying God brings them a mate.

Church is hard for the teenage girl, wearing a scarlet letter, ashamed of her mistakes.

Church is hard for the sinners.

Church is hard for me.

It’s hard because on the outside it all looks shiny and perfect. Sunday best in behavior and dress.

However, underneath those layers, you find a body of imperfect people, carnal souls, selfish motives.

But, here is the beauty of church—

Church isn’t a building, mentality, or expectation.

Church is a body.

Church is a group of sinners, saved by grace, living in fellowship as saints.

Church is a body of believers bound as brothers and sisters by an eternal love.

Church is a holy ground where sinners stand as equals before the Throne of Grace.

Church is a refuge for broken hearts and a training ground for mighty warriors.

Church is a converging of confrontation and invitation. Where sin is confronted and hearts are invited to seek restoration.

Church is a lesson in faith and trust.

Church is a bearer of burdens and a giver of hope.

Church is a family. A family coming together, setting aside differences, forgetting past mistakes, rejoicing in the smallest of victories.

Church, the body, and the circle of sinners-turned-saints, is where He resides, and if we ask, He is faithful to come.

So even on the hard days at church—

The days when I am at odds with a friend, When I’ve fought with my husband because we’re late once again. When I’ve walked in bearing burdens heavier than my heart can handle, yet masking the pain with a smile on my face. When I’ve worn a scarlet letter, under the microscope. When I’ve longed for a baby to hold, or fought tears as the lyrics were sung. When I’ve walked back in, afraid and broken, after walking away.

I’ll remember, He has never failed to meet me there.

A copy & paste status that I think is so true and needs needs to be said. Church is a body, a family, a place to love God and love others through our struggles!

I still believe in Amazing Grace

That there is power in the blood

That He walks with me
And He talks with me

And because He lives
I can face tomorrow

All because of

HE TOUCHED ME
Shackled by a heavy burden,
'Neath a load of guilt and shame.
Then the hand of Jesus touched me,
And now I am no longer the same.

He touched me, Oh He touched me,
And oh the joy that floods my soul!
Something happened and now I know,
He touched me and made me whole.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your cares upon Him for He cares for you.
When we worry about tomorrow, it just takes our joy away from today.
