Celebrating Recovery & Hope at UCAN City Mission

September is National Recovery Month, a SAMHSA initiative honoring over 30 years of awareness for substance use and mental health recovery.

While we celebrate recovery with our staff and guests every single day, this month highlights the strength of every individual on this journey.

We are especially grateful for our staff members with lived experience in recovery. Their personal stories bring deep empathy and hope to UCAN, serving as living proof to our guests that transformation is possible.

To everyone in recovery or taking those first steps: we see you, we honor your strength, and we walk with you, Jesus in our hearts.

Congratulations Brittany!

At 22, Brittany came to Hope Haven Women’s Shelter after seeking emergency housing through the Chautauqua County Department of Social Services. With support from Hope Haven staff and community partners, she worked each day to overcome barriers and reach her goals. Hope Haven provided a stable, supportive environment where Brittany could meet with service providers and obtain community resources. In less than two months, Brittany obtained her ID, secured part-time employment at a local retailer, and moved into her own apartment. She also received assistance with work clothing, transportation, and a rental subsidy to help keep her new home affordable.

Brittany’s determination and ambition, combined with community resources and support, have helped set her up for success. Congratulations, Brittany! We are so proud of all you’ve accomplished and wish you the very best in your new chapter! 🌟

This past Saturday, August 29th, our caseworker Kate represented UCAN City Mission at the "Be the Light: Anyone Can Save a Life" event in Dunkirk! Together We Can CHQ did a fantastic job putting this event together.

"We loved connecting with community members, sharing local resources, and standing alongside dedicated organizations working to support, restore, and empower individuals across Chautauqua County. It was a good time to inform and remind our neighbors we have a safe space available when in need. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to say hello or learn more about our mission. Together, we can continue to bring light and hope to our neighbors in need!" -Kate Nutting

We are so honored to see our Executive Director, Bruce Baehr, recognized in this recent article by The Post-Journal.

Over the past several years, Bruce has brought vision, compassion, creativity, and a deep commitment to the mission of UCAN City Mission. Under his leadership, our organization has experienced tremendous growth- not only in the programs and services we provide, but in the partnerships and relationships we’ve built throughout our community. His ability to see possibilities, bring people together, and continually ask, “What more can we do?” has been an incredible asset to UCAN.

What stands out most, though, is Bruce’s humility. As the article reflects, he is quick to give credit to God, our community, our partners, our staff, and the many people who have supported the mission along the way. Those of us who have had the privilege of working alongside him know how much heart, energy, and genuine care he brings to this work. We are incredibly thankful for the mark he has made on UCAN and on the lives of so many people in our community.

Thank you, Bruce, for saying “yes” when UCAN was only supposed to be a three or four month commitment!💙
We’re grateful you stayed and we’re excited to see what the next chapter holds for you and for UCAN.

Please take a moment to read the full article and celebrate with us the incredible work happening at UCAN City Mission.

"This has truly been a blessing," said Bruce Baehr, who is planning to return to retirement after a longer-than-anticipated stint as director of the UCAN City Mission. "I couldn't have done anything on my own. First, I give credit to God, and the amazing support the mission receives from the community, and all the support of the local granting agencies, non-profits, and our governmental partners."

Another beautiful night of devotion hosted by the wonderful Jamestown City Revival. You can feel The Holy Spirit and love of Jesus Christ in the Chapel and throughout the building when our friends from Family Church Jamestown, NY visit us Thursday's at 7 P.M. They put the chapel here at UCAN City Mission to perfect use with the fellowship of their weekly Men's Devotion.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is changing lives in Jamestown! 🔥

We had a wonderful night of fellowship at UCAN last week.

One gentleman struggling with addiction surrendered his life to Christ and shared he was 3 days sober. We are cheering him on as he continues to walk with Jesus! Another man received the life-changing forgiveness that Christ freely gives to us all. 🙌

Thank you, Lord, for bringing hope, healing, and restoration to our community!❤️
