~ We Must Never Forget ~

When I was a kid (a long time ago, in a land far, far away ), I remember hearing people say they could tell you exactly where they were when they learned Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor. That event changed the lives of all Americans as we found ourselves fully engaged in World War II. Some memorable photos were taken that tragic day, but not many.

On September 11, 2001, the entire world watched as another act of terror was directed at the United States, and those of us who lived through it can tell you exactly where we were when we learned of this great tragedy. More people died on September 11th from this terrorist attack than at Pearl Harbor. The world changed just as it did for the generation of the 1940s.

We can learn many lessons from both of these events, the greatest of which is life's uncertainty. From living as though everything is as it always has been, one moment, to taking that last breath the next. We each have an appointment with God, the time and date known only by God, but we should be ready at all times. God help us to never forget that.

~ Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire ~

My parents taught me that a man's word is his bond, that a man is only as good as his word. That seems to be an outdated concept today. People will promise to do something, with no intention of doing it. Sometimes we do the same thing with God. To paraphrase Deuteronomy 23:21, we are told that when we make a vow, or a promise, to God, He will require us to fulfill it. If we don't, it becomes sin, and God will deal with that.

Many people make promises when they are in a tight spot, but forget them once the situation has passed. Over time, we may forget promises we made or promises made to us, but God does not. A promise is something we voluntarily make; no one forces us to make it. Let me be clear that I mean honorable promises and vows, not evil ones.

What vows have you made? If we are married, we promised to be faithful to our spouse. If we borrowed money from a financial institution, we promised to repay it. If we are a member of a church, we promised to be faithful. A promise made should be a promise kept.

I know people who cannot be trusted, and that is sad. Trust is like respect; it is earned, not given, and it begins with our words. If the axiom, "Liar, liar, pants on fire," was literal, how many burning pants would we see, or how many nose's would grow like Pinocchio's? Let's not make liars out of ourselves by making promises we never keep.
