Sharks in a Lake? The Truth About Nicaragua’s Freshwater Fish 💙🦈🇳🇮
It sounds unbelievable, but Lake Nicaragua in Nicaragua is home to real sharks. The species found there is the bull shark, known for its rare ability to live in both saltwater and freshwater.

These sharks reach the lake by swimming inland from the Caribbean Sea through the San Juan River. While this might sound dangerous, attacks on humans in the lake are extremely rare.
There are a few key reasons for this. Shark populations in the lake are relatively low, and they tend to avoid areas with heavy human activity. Like most sharks, bull sharks do not hunt humans—incidents are typically cases of mistaken identity, not aggression.

For generations, local communities have lived, fished, and traveled on the lake without significant danger. Today, conservation measures have even reduced shark numbers further, making encounters even less likely.

In reality, these “freshwater sharks” are far more a scientific curiosity than a threat—proof of nature’s adaptability rather than something to fear.

It has been such a blessing to serve alongside the Baptist Campus Ministry team from UNF this week.

They have had a great week engaging in street outreach, leading youth conferences, and sharing the Gospel with those in the community. Today, they were also able to enjoy a well-deserved time of rest at the beach before heading into a student rally tonight.

Thank you, BCM, for allowing us the opportunity to serve with you and to share in what God is doing here in Nicaragua. We are grateful for your hearts to serve and your faithfulness to the mission.

This week, Union Hill Baptist Church has been serving alongside Pastor Chase and Karla, making a meaningful impact in every way.

The team has led small groups, hosted women’s and men’s conferences, made tie-dye shirts with the community, and begun construction on new bathrooms for the church.

This team from Oklahoma has truly made their state proud. They have worked hard, served faithfully, and represented their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with excellence.

This is a busy—but truly amazing—week as we welcome 45 mission team members to the Garden of Leon Mission House to serve alongside our ministry partners here in León.

We are blessed to host teams from Faithbridge Church, Baptist Campus Ministries at UNF, and Union Hill Baptist Church from Oklahoma, all coming together to be the hands and feet of Christ.

To accommodate everyone, we are currently using two mission houses, but after this week, we will be transitioning fully into our new mission house.

Throughout the week, there will be conferences, street outreach, and ministry opportunities, while the team from Oklahoma will be building restrooms ( thank you Jeff and Danielle) for Bethel Church and Pastor Chase.

God is moving in incredible ways—and we are grateful to be part of what He is doing.

It was another wonderful day for our team, filled with two church services and a Christmas celebration alongside some incredible children. Jeff brought the message, while others shared their powerful testimonies. We also had the joy of worshiping for the first time in the Church of Pastor Chase and Karla. And along the way, we learned an important lesson: it’s never a good idea to hand a child a stick and tell him to hit something in order to get candy!

Day 2 was full and fruitful—God was truly at work all day. The team began the morning street witnessing, where we had the opportunity to pray with people and for people we met along the way. We ended the day by hosting a parenting conference, and it was amazing to see how openly and warmly everyone responded to the team. God clearly brought the right people—those who needed to hear exactly what He had placed on our hearts.

On Sunday, the team will attend two church services and celebrate Christmas with the children of Deyana.
