As we approach Labor Day weekend, we are reminded of the Social Creed for the 21st Century, which calls us to "offer a vision of a society that shares more and consumes less, seeks compassion over suspicion and equality over domination, and finds security in joined hands rather than in massed arms.”

“A Social Creed for the 21st Century” lifts up Jesus’ words in John 10:10, that he came so that we might have abundant life. In 1776, the same year the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, Rev. John Gloucester was born into slavery in Tennessee. After he was manumitted in 1806, he became the first African American ordained as a Presbyterian minister in the U.S. and founded the nation’s first Black Presbyterian congregation in the very city where independence was declared.

Today, we honor his life and legacy.
