Self-awareness changes the way we encounter Jesus. When we recognize our own need for grace, we become more open to receiving it, and more willing to extend it to others.

The Gospel reminds us that Jesus was often welcomed most readily by those who knew they needed Him, while those convinced of their own righteousness struggled to recognize Him.

May we have the humility to see ourselves truthfully, the empathy to see others graciously, and the openness to let Jesus transform what He reveals in us.

“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.” — Luke 18:14

What a meaningful Sabbath together!

Today, through the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1–10, we were reminded that Jesus sees us as we truly are, even when we struggle to understand ourselves.

Zacchaeus climbed a tree to see Jesus, perhaps expecting to hide, and remain safely at a distance. But Jesus stopped, looked up, saw him, called him by name, and invited Himself into his home. Jesus saw beyond what the crowd saw. He saw beyond Zacchaeus’ reputation and actions to the person who was ready for transformation.

There can be discomfort in being seen that clearly. Jesus calls us from our hiding places and invites us to open our homes, and ourselves, to His presence. Yet it is in allowing ourselves to be fully seen by Jesus that transformation can begin.

And as Jesus sees us, He also teaches us how to see: to grow in self-awareness, to recognize what needs to change within us, and to extend empathy toward others rather than reducing them to their failures, reputations, or pasts.

May we grow in the self-awareness and empathy that Jesus modeled in this encounter, allowing the way He sees us to transform both how we see ourselves and how we see one another.

“Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” — Luke 19:5, NRSV
