Vayera — “He Appeared”

This week’s Torah portion begins as the Lord appears to Abraham near the oaks of Mamre. Abraham welcomes three visitors with generous hospitality, and the promise of a son is renewed. Though Sarah laughs at what seems impossible, the Lord asks a question that echoes throughout the portion: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”
Abraham then learns of the coming judgment upon S***m and Gomorrah. With compassion and courage, he intercedes for the righteous who may be living there. The account of S***m and Lot reminds us of the seriousness of sin, the certainty of God’s judgment, and the urgency of responding faithfully when the Lord calls.
God fulfills His promise with the birth of Isaac, bringing laughter and joy to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. The portion reaches its most searching moment when Abraham is told to offer Isaac, the beloved son of promise. Abraham obeys in faith, trusting God even when he cannot understand the path before him. At the decisive moment, God Himself provides: a ram caught in the thicket takes Isaac’s place, and the Lord reaffirms His covenant promises to Abraham.
The Haftarah also reveals God as the One who provides, keeps His promises, and restores life. Through the prophet Elisha, a widow’s small supply of oil is multiplied to meet her need. The Shunammite woman receives the promised son she never expected, and when tragedy comes, her child is restored to life.
In the B’rit Chadasha, Yeshua points to the days of Lot as a warning to remain spiritually awake and prepared for the coming of the Son of Man. James turns our attention to Abraham’s obedience, teaching that genuine faith does not remain hidden—it becomes visible through action.
Abraham’s willingness to offer Isaac demonstrated a faith that trusted God completely.
