The Catholic Church celebrated the XI World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on Sept. 1, with Pope Leo XIV inviting Catholics to reflect on the theme, “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks” (Isaiah 2:4).

The annual observance, established by Pope Francis in 2015, marks the beginning of the Season of Creation, an ecumenical period observed from Sept. 1 through Oct. 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. In his 2026 message, Pope Leo focuses on the link between armed conflict and environmental degradation, noting that war harms not only people and communities but also creation, contributing to poverty, inequality and further conflict.

Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Gregory the Great. Gregory sent monks to evangelize England, reformed the Church’s chant, and signed himself servant of the servants of God. He is the Patron Saint of teachers, musicians, epilepsy, and England.

💡Fun Fact: In 1969, the feast day of Saint Gregory the Great was moved from March 12 to September 3 so that it would no longer fall during Lent.
