It is by the un-meritted favor of God that we are saved. We didn't earn it by doing something. We don't choose Him, He chose us.
It's by faith, founded in hope. Because we can't claim responsibility for making it happen. We have no standing in our boating or acting superior.
We definitely can't use our declaration of works as a receipt to God. Salvation is a gift. The same gift is freely given to all who call upon the name of Jesus Christ through faith

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.
