The ones who cannot receive Jesus’ word – whose hearts are beneath a toughened layer or covered in rocks or thorns -- they are not deficient, they are just human. And it’s not easy to tell what is happening inside the hearts of people – what kind of soil they are under the surface – which is why Jesus, the sower, scatters the word everywhere without saving it only for the ones who seem most likely to receive it.

The word is strewn with extravagant generosity, indiscriminately, even though it won’t take root everywhere, because it might take root anywhere.
