When In Adversity, I’ll Still Have Joy

When we refer to Apostle Paul, we think of his faith. We know that he was a great man of faith. But I believe that there is another characteristic about this man’s life that should be mentioned right alongside his faith, and that is his joy.

The people in Lamentations had lost many things. They had lost many possessions, confidence, stability, security, peace, and most of all, joy. They didn’t see anything in their lives to be joyful about.

Lamentations 5:21 says, “Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.”

What were they saying? In other words, “God, we need some restoration in our lives. We’ve lost many things. There are many negative things happening in our lives. There is nothing positive that we can point at. And we’ve lost our joy. Our joy has withered away. Restore us, Lord.”

Have you recently asked God for some restoration? Many times, we find ourselves needing restoration. Why? Because Satan is a thief. He comes to steal, to kill and to destroy your life (John 10:10). I’m sure he’s stolen some things from you. He may have stolen your marriage, your finances, your children, your job, your peace, your joy, your confidence. He is a thief out to destroy your life. And what you need is restoration.

You may be waking up in the middle of the night wondering where in the world you are going to get the money to meet that need. God, is it over? Is this as far as we go? What did I do to get into this kind of condition? God, have I sinned? Lord, what is going on here? The worst thing you can do is lose your joy. Joy is vitally important in the midst of adversity. Joy is a powerful force.

Hebrews 10:32-34 says, “But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions.....

The most important thing for you to do when Satan is trying to take everything you’ve got is maintain your joy.

Protecting Your Spiritual Heart

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Proverbs 4:23

God wants you to protect your spiritual heart by shielding it from the world's negative influences. Your spiritual heart is different from your physical heart, but they both play a vital role in your survival. The role of your physical heart is to control your entire physical body. It pumps blood throughout every facet of your body in order to sustain your life. Without your heart, your physical body would die.

Similarly, your soul (your mind, will, and emotions) plays a vital role in maintaining your spiritual life. Your mind, will, and emotions are all influenced by what is in your spiritual heart. Just as you protect your physical heart through exercise and a proper diet, you must also guard your spiritual heart against anything that is contrary to the Word of God. Therefore, you must be diligent to watch what you put before your eyes and what you listen to. You can protect your spiritual heart by depositing the Word of God.

Love Never Fails

Love never fails...”
(1 Corinthians 13:8, NIV)

We all have people in our lives that are difficult at times. Maybe it’s someone you work with, a family member or even your spouse. Relationships can be complicated, but remember: love never fails. The Word of God clearly defines love in 1 Corinthians 13. It says that love is patient and kind. It doesn’t seek its own way. Love doesn’t keep a record of wrongs. And most importantly, love never fails. Notice that this chapter doesn’t talk at all about how you feel. God’s love isn’t about feelings. It’s a choice. You can choose to be patient, even when you don’t feel like being patient. You can choose to be kind, even when you don’t feel like being kind.

No matter what situation you find yourself in, you can choose love. You are never more like God than when you are walking in love. And when you are walking in love, you will never fail because love never fails. Open your heart to God’s love today. Receive His love and ask Him to show you how to love others better because love never fails!

Acknowledge God

In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.
—Proverbs 3:6

It is so easy to start making a plan instead of waiting on God to give us His plan. Sometimes we are so entrenched in our own plans that we don’t even sense the leading of the Holy Spirit. But the proverb says to acknowledge God in all our ways, and that means to care about what He thinks and submit our plans to Him for approval.

Having a plan is not a bad thing, but we can simply say to God each day, “Lord, I have a plan for today, but I acknowledge You in it. And if You don’t approve of any part of it, then I am willing to change and do what You want.” If you truly care about what God desires, He will direct you in the way you should go if any changes need to be made to your plans.

Power Thought: I acknowledge God in all my plans, and He always guides me.

Keep Standing

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
(Ephesians 6:13, NIV)

Sometimes, people have problems because they are making poor choices or doing something wrong. But other times, people are having difficulties because they are doing something right.

When you’re determined to fulfill your God-given destiny, and you’re taking steps to improve your life or make a difference in your family or community, don’t be surprised if you face opposition. The enemy is not going to just roll out the red carpet and watch you fulfill your God-given destiny. He’ll do whatever he can to keep you from moving forward. The apostle Paul said this, “A wide door of opportunity is open for me and there are many adversaries.” I’ve found that anytime you try to go forward in life, anytime you try to make progress, there will be opposition. But with God on your side, you can stand your ground! Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. If you’re facing opposition today, keep standing, keep believing, keep hoping. Keep fighting the good fight of faith until you see the victory He has in store for you!

Requirement for Revelation

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
James 1:21

Notice the phrase "receive with meekness the engrafted word." The person who receives revelation is teachable. The individual who says, "I've heard this message before. I don't need to hear it again" has been excluded.

This engrafted Word is able to save your souls. The Word is the power of God for whatever you need. The Amplified Bible says, "In a humble (gentle, modest) spirit receive and welcome the word."

You are good ground, if you have an open heart to receive the Word of God and you're not a hard-hearted, hard-headed, know-it-all. "Good ground people" hear the Word of God and say, "If God said it, I believe it, and that settles it. If God said it, I'll do it, no matter how much I may feel like not doing it."

No matter how you feel — you can always be a light!

John 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

D. L. Moody told the story of a man who was crossing the Atlantic by ship. He was terribly seasick and confined to his cabin. One night he heard the cry "Man overboard!" But he felt that there was nothing he could do to help. Then he said to himself, "I can at least put my lantern in the porthole." He struggled to his feet and hung the light so it would shine out into the darkness.

The next day he learned that the person who was rescued said, "I was going down in the dark night for the last time when someone put a light in a porthole. As it shone on my hand, a sailor in a lifeboat grabbed it and pulled me in."

All of us have weaknesses — and times of weakness. The fact of the matter is, though, that weak or not, we need to muster up the strength to put our lights in our portholes for the sake of the dying and the lost among us. It's so tempting to sulk in our weaknesses, and stay in our cabins — but God expects more of us. He has given us the strength to do all things — even move mountains! There are so many people around us sinking in despair. God has chosen us to reach out and light up their lives!

Let's do something extraordinary for the Lord today. Be bold, speak up, let's get beyond our weaknesses!

God bless us all
