"SALT 🧂OF THE EARTH"

(Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.)

This verse is when Jesus uses salt to illustrate we (believer's) role in society. Just as salt influences food, Christians are called to positively impact and influence the world around them.

The Two Functions of Salt

*Preservative: Without refrigeration, salt is rubbed into meat to prevent corruption and decay. Spiritually, we (believers) act as a moral influence, holding back the spread of evil and decay in a sinful world. (Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.) And (Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.)

*Flavor Enhancer: Salt brings out the best flavor in food. We (Christians) are meant to make life better, bringing qualities like love, hope, peace, and integrity to the communities we live in. (Mark 9:50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.)

Remember, The phrase "good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot" refers to losing your spiritual purpose. It means a "flavorless" or compromised believer ultimately becomes ineffective for God’s kingdom.✨️

"REJOICE AND EXCEEDING GLAD" (JESUS SAID)

(Matthew 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.)

This verse states that we (believers) should embrace mistreatment for our faith. Jesus promises that enduring insults, lies, and persecution is evidence of a shared legacy with the ancient prophets and guarantees a magnificent spiritual reward in heaven.

*Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: Rather than despairing over mistreatment, we are called to experience extreme leaping joy. (Luke 6:23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.) And (Acts 5:41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.)

*Great is your reward in heaven: This shifts perspective from temporary earthly suffering to eternal glory. God provides an ultimate prize and eternal vindication for us who remain faithful under pressure. (Luke 6:22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.) And (Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.)

Remember, this verse is the culmination of the Beatitudes (specifically tied to the final beatitude in Matthew 5:11), which focuses on being persecuted for the sake of righteousness and Christ's name.✨️

"REVILED, PERSECUTED AND SPOKEN EVIL AGAINST FALSELY" (BEATITUDES)

(Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.)

This verse is where Jesus tells his followers (us) we are "blessed" (spiritually favored) when others insult, persecute, or lie about us because of our faith in Him. It's re-assurance that enduring false accusations and mistreatment for Christ's sake brings heavenly reward.

*Revile: To be harshly criticize, defamed, or be verbally abused. (1 Peter 2:23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:)

*Persecuted: To be harassed, oppressed, or mistreated. (1 Peter 3:14,17 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.)

*Say all manner of evil against you falsely: The suffering and ridicule must be entirely untrue. It does not count if a believer is being punished for doing something genuinely wrong. (1 Peter 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.)

Remember, this mistreatment must happen specifically because of our identification with Jesus Christ. (2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.)✨️

"THE PERSECUTED" (BEATITUDES)

(Matthew 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.)

This verse means that we who suffer for doing what is right, and for following God's ways, are spiritually favored by God. Despite facing hostility, our ultimate reward is eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

*Persecuted for righteousness' sake: Being harassed, mocked, mistreated, or harmed for living according to God's standards and standing up for His truth.Theirs is the kingdom of heaven: (Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;) ; (John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.) ; (2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.) And (1 Peter 3:14,17 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.)

Remember, the guarantee of a secure place in God's eternal rule and presence is the reward.✨️

"PURE IN HEART" (BEATITUDES)

(Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.)

This verse is where Jesus highlights that inward sincerity and devotion more than outward actions. It promises that we who are completely dedicated to God will experience His presence now and in eternity.

●Pure means being clean, blameless, unmixed, or without hidden motives.

*Singleness of Devotion: It doesn't just mean moral perfection or being free from sin. It refers to having a heart that is not divided, diluted, or hypocritical. (Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.) ; (Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.) And (James 1:8; 4:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.)

*Internal Focus: It contrasts with religious leaders of the time who followed rules outwardly but harbored corrupt intentions like we see today. (Matthew 23:25,26 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.) And (Luke 11:39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.)

Remember, God judges the center of our thoughts, motives, and desires.✨️

"MERCIFUL" (BEATITUDES)

(Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.)

This verse means that we who actively show compassion, forgiveness, and grace to others will ultimately receive that same grace, both from their fellow humans and from God. This may not always seem prevalent due to the fallen world we live in.

*Merciful: Mercy is more than just feeling sorry for someone; it is the active choice to show compassion or withhold a punishment that is deserved. It involves forgiving those who have wronged you and helping those in need. (Luke 6:36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.) ; (Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;) And (James 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.)

Remember, we who have experienced God's forgiveness are expected to extend that same forgiveness to others. If you hold onto bitterness or refuse to forgive, you close yourself off to the grace God extends. (Matthew 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.)✨️
