A piece commissioned by a temple sibling.
🤎 Commissioned piece: Inanna. Inanna was one of the most important goddesses of ancient Sumer in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). Worshipped over 4,000 years ago, she ruled over love, fertility, beauty, war, political power, and the planet Venus. Unlike many deities who governed a single domain, Inanna embodied both creation and destruction, passion and conflict.
She was especially revered in the city of Uruk and featured in some of the world's oldest surviving literature. Inanna was believed to possess the me, divine powers that formed the foundations of civilization, including kingship, law, and craftsmanship.
Her most famous myth, The Descent of Inanna, tells of her journey into the Underworld ruled by her sister Ereshkigal. After passing through seven gates and surrendering her symbols of power, she dies and is later restored to life, making the story one of humanity's earliest tales of death, transformation, and rebirth. As the Akkadian goddess Ishtar, her influence spread across the ancient Near East and endured for millennia.
