President Dieter F. Uchtdorf and President Emily Belle Freeman welcomed members of the local and national media to Temple Square Visitors’ Center in Salt Lake City on Monday, April 13.

They showed the “Inside a Temple” experience to the media and spoke about why the Church chose to create something akin to a permanent temple open house.

“We are hoping this will be a place where you can feel reverence. And we are hoping this is a place where you will come to learn that Jesus Christ is the center of our faith,” President Freeman said.

This newspaper story in The Jaxon highlights the history of the Church in Florida including early converts in the Jacksonville area including Thaddeus Hill, Elder Charles A. Callis, and George Canova, who was martyred because of his faith. The first Stake President of the first stake in Florida was the grandson of George Canova. The first Patriarch in Florida was James Roland Boone. We are so grateful for the members of the Church who sacrificed so much, and who continued in faith despite facing significant challenges.

The story also highlights the significance of the temples in Florida to members of the Church. Prior to 1974 when the DC Temple was dedicated, members of The Church in Florida had to travel West to attend the Temple in either Mesa, Arizona, or Utah. In 1983, a Temple was dedicated in Atlanta. Many members of the Church sacrificed much to attend the temple to make covenants with God and be sealed to their families. But soon, there will be five temples in Florida. What a blessing that members of the Church in Florida can be sealed to their families for eternity in the beautiful temples in Florida!

Sarah Epperson of Orange Park, Florida shares an experience that her family recently had with the temple:

"Since joining Boy Scouts in December, the boys had been excited about a specific camping trip – talking about it for over a month! Right before the trip, we were invited to attend the temple with the youth – on the same weekend as their campout. This would have been Porter's first time attending the temple.

The boys didn't know what to do. They had been talking about the campout since
joining the troop and now they were faced with deciding which to attend - camping or the temple. I was heartbroken as I thought about the possibility of us not being there as a family for Porter's first temple visit.

As my husband Steven and I talked, we felt strongly that we needed to set the precedent and prioritize the temple. We couldn't promise to plan a trip sometime after the campout. The temple had to come first. And it did. The Lord knew
our hearts, the lesson we needed to teach, and He paved a way for us to do BOTH.

With two days notice, we were able to schedule a temple visit for the only night that we didn't have a prior commitment, travel 2.5 hours to the Tallahassee Temple, and attend the temple together as a family.

My parents (who had even less notice) were able to join us! We loved being there together as a family and watching Porter reverently soak it all in. It was a wonderful trip, one that I will forever be thankful for. I hope the boys remember that we chose the temple and put the Lord first."

The Bible tells us that Moses had a tabernacle, Solomon built a beautiful temple, and Jesus taught at the temple in Jerusalem. Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints builds temples all over the world that connect us to our families eternally and prepare us to eventually live with God.

President Bret Smith, the Stake President of the Jacksonville Florida East Stake shared, "...there will be a peace and a joy that emanates from that [temple] property and I know that we all need that at this time." We look forward to having a sacred House of the Lord in Jacksonville soon!
