The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 18

"One day some parents brought their little children to Jesus so he could touch them and bless them, but the disciples told them not to bother him. Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you, anyone who doesn't have their kind of faith will never get into the Kingdom of God.""

It was customary for a mother to bring her children to a rabbi for a blessing, and that is why these mothers gathered around Jesus.

The disciples, however, thought the children were unworthy of the Master's time - - less important than whatever He was doing.

But Jesus welcomed them, because little children have the kind of faith and trust needed to enter God's Kingdom.

It is important that we introduce our children to Jesus and that we ourselves approach Him with child-like attitudes of acceptance, faith, and trust.

The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 18

"Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisees, and the other was a dishonest tax collector. The proud Pharisees stood by himself and prayed this prayer: 'I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else, especially like that tax collector over there! For I never cheat, I don't sin, I don't commit adultery, I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.' But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, 'O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.' I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisees, returned home justified before God. For the proud will be humbled, but the humble will be honored.""

The Pharisee did not go to the Temple to pray to God but to announce to all within earshot how good he was.

The tax collector went recognizing his sin and begging for mercy.

Self-righteousness is dangerous. It leads to pride, causes a person to despise others, and prevents him or her from learning anything from God.

The tax collectors prayer should be our prayer because we all need God's mercy everyday.

Don't let pride in your achievements cut you off from God.

The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 18

"Then the Lord said, "Learn a lesson from this evil judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the end, so don't you think God will surely give Justice to his chosen people who plead with him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

If godless judges respond to constant pressure, how much more will a great and loving God respond to us. If we know He loves us, we can believe He will hear our cries for help.

“THE GOD WHO KEEPS SHOWING UP”
“HE SHOWS UP WHEN YOU NEED STRENGTH”

INTRODUCTION —
“THE GOD WHO DOESN’T GET TIRED”

Dearly Beloved, one thing life will do is drain you.
Life can wear you down emotionally.
Life can wear you down financially.
Life can wear you down mentally.
Life can wear you down spiritually.
And if we tell the truth this morning, there are some people sitting in this sanctuary right now who are smiling on the outside but tired on the inside.
Tired from carrying responsibilities.
Tired from fighting battles.
Tired from trying to hold families together.
Tired from being strong for everybody else.
Tired from praying prayers that seem unanswered.
And sometimes exhaustion is not physical.
Sometimes your body is awake, but your spirit is exhausted.
Can I preach to some real people this morning?
Sometimes you get tired of smiling.
Tired of pretending.
Tired of surviving.
Tired of holding it all together.
But I came to announce to somebody that we serve a God who keeps showing up with strength right when His people are running out.
Look at somebody and tell them:
“God will give you strength.”
No, tell somebody else like you believe it:“God will give you strength!”
The beautiful thing about our God is this:
God never gets tired.
God never gets exhausted.
God never has a nervous breakdown.
God never has to recharge Himself.
God never has to take a vacation.

The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 18

"A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, appealing for justice against someone who had harmed her."

Widows and orphans were among the most vulnerable of all God's people, and both Old Testament prophecies and New Testament apostles insisted that these needed people be properly cared for.

Read Exodus 22:22-24; Isaiah 1:17; 1st Timothy 5 3; and James 1:27.

The Gospel According to luke - Chapter 18

"One day Jesus told his disciples of this illustrate that need for constant prayer and to show them that they must never give up."

To persist and prayer and not give up does not mean endless repetition or painfully long prayer sessions.

Constant prayer means keeping a request continually before God as we live for Him day by day, believing he will answer.

When we live by faith, we are not giving up.

God May delay answering, but His delays always have good reasons.

As we persist in prayer, we grow in character, faith, and hope.

The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 17

"Two women will be grinding flour together at the mill; one will be taken, and the other left. "Lord, where will this happen?" the disciples asked. Jesus replied, "Just as the gathering of vultures show there is a caucus nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.""

To answer the disciples' question, Jesus quoted a familiar proverb.

One vulture circling overhead does not mean much, but a gathering of vultures means that the a dead body is nearby.

Likewise, one sign of the end may not be significant, but when many signs occur, the Second Coming is near.

The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 17

"When the son of man returns, the world will be like the people were in Noah's day. And those days before the blood, the people enjoyed banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat and the flood came to destroy them all... Whoever clings to this life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will save it. That night two people will be asleep in one bed; one will be taken away, and the other will be left. Two women will be grinding flour together in a fields; one will be taken, the other left..."

Jesus warned against false security.

We are to abandon the values and attachments of this world in order to be ready for Christ's return. His return will happen suddenly, and when he comes, that would be no second chances. Some will be taken to be with him; the rest will be left behind.

“Don’t Forget What She Taught You”
Text: Proverbs 6:20–23 (KJV)

Verse 20 - My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

Dearly Beloved, this is a sacred space today. Not just because we gathered…Not just because the choir sang…Not just because the Word will be preached…But because today, memory is in the room. Love is in the room. Legacy is in the room. Sacrifice is in the room.

Because when you say “Mother’s Day,” you don’t just say a holiday…
You say history…You say heart…You say help…And I need to acknowledge something from the beginning—this day carries weight.

For some, it’s a day of celebration.
For others, it’s a day of sorrow.
For some, it’s full of hugs and phone calls.
For others, it’s filled with memories and tears.

Some had mothers who nurtured them…
Others had to navigate life without that presence…Some are mothers rejoicing…
Others are mothers grieving…

So today we don’t just honor perfect pictures,
We honor real people with real stories.
Mothers who struggled…
Mothers who sacrificed…
Mothers who stretched what they had…
Mothers who stood in the gap…
And if the truth be told—
Some of us didn’t understand what she was doing back then…

The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 17

"One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, "When will the kingdom of God come?" Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God isn't ushered in with visible signs. You won't be able to say, 'Here it is!' or 'It's over there!' for the Kingdom of God is among you.""

The Pharisees asked when God's Kingdom would come, not knowing that it had already arrived.

The Kingdom of God is not like an earthly Kingdom with geographical boundaries.

Instead, it begins with the work of God's Spirit in peoples lives and in relationships.

We must resist looking to institutions or programs for evidence of the progress of God's kingdom. Instead, we should look for what God is doing in people's hearts.

The Gospel According to Luke - Chapter 17

One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, "Praise God, I'm healed!" He fell face down on the ground at Jesus' feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan.

Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one returned to thank him.

It is possible to receive God's great gifts with an ungrateful spirit - - nine of the 10 men did so.

Only the thankful man, however, learned that his faith had played a role in his healing; and only grateful Christians grow in understanding God's grace.

God does not demand that we thank Him, but He is pleased when we do so. And He uses our responsiveness to teach us more about Himself.
