False Comforts

God is our refuge and strength, and ever present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1

Because people are often lost, stuck, and hurt, there are a lot of offers out there for support and comfort. Buy this lucky charm! This book has like all the answers! Use this crystal! The obvious problem is that none of those things have any power. They were dreamed up, carved out, and mass produced. You, however, have a direct line to the Creator himself. The one who sees all, knows all, has authority over all is with you! His help is true and complete.
God not only has power to help, but he wants to help. Nothing delights him more than when his child comes to him with her open heart. He comforts the hopeless, gives wisdom to the troubled, and leads the way for the lost. There is nothing he can't make clean. Nothing is too sad that he can't bring joy. Nothing is too big that he can't defeat.
Don't put your faith in counterfeits when the One who has seen it all and knows it all is waiting for you.

Prayer Pointer
Thank you, Father, for always, being with me. In joy and trouble, you are faithful. I am grateful.

Dreams

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
Proverbs 13:12

What are your dreams? Do you want to sing your heart out? Dance on broadway? Write the next great next great novel? Now think about the simple day-to-day things. Maybe you want to do well in school, have a best friend you can count on, and get along with your siblings. When something we hope for doesn't happen, it can be tough.
God understands that it's frustrating when you don't accomplish exactly what you want. He won't come down and give you a big old bear hug, but God might use something or someone to cheer you up. He might create a blazing sunset or have your mom make your favorite cookies.
God cares about your hopes and dreams, but not everything you wish for is from him. If you keep your heart set on something that is out of your reach and God has not confirmed that he is part of it, your heart can become quite sad. Instead, give your hopes over to god. Ask him to turn them into reality or change your focus.

Prayer Pointer
Lord, you know my hopes and dreams. You know the ones I've had to put off and you understand how much that hurts. Thank you for caring about me.

Powerful People

Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of their power comes to nothing.
Proverbs 11:7

The world is filled with powerful people. Kings, queens, presidents, prime minister's, governors, and mayors to name a few.
A person with power is able to get other people to do things. So that means you personally know some people who have power. The principle of your school. The pastor of your church. Your parents. Even the popular kids have power to sway other kids. It is natural to look up to people who have more power than you do. Often they become like heroes. They have control over things you don't, so it feels easy to trust them. Having them around makes us feel safe.
But even powerful people can't do everything. And powerful people don't live forever. Nobody does. No wonder King Solomon warns us not to get two starry eyed with people. Sure, it's okay to have heroes. You can learn a lot from grown ups who have special abilities and influence. But don't worship them. Don't expect them to be perfect. They can't be. Human beings, even the most powerful ones, can let you down. They are not God.

Prayer Pointer
Lord, sometimes it's hard to trust you because I can't see you. It's easier to admire others more than you sometimes. But you are the only one who will never let me down.

Discipline

Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
Proverbs 10:17

What's the punishment in your house for not finishing your chores or for yelling at your parents? Time out, being grounded, or missing out on a sleepover? No one likes to get in trouble. The punishment, though, makes you think twice before you disobey again. Here's a surprise: kids aren't the only ones who get disciplined. Adults face it too, but they don't lose their allowance or go to time out. Ask your mom to tell you about a time she got in trouble as a grown up. You'll be surprised. Then ask your mom what she learned from it.
Everyone would agree that discipline is not fun. Being corrected by those in authority - parents, teachers, pastors- is part of learning. Think about it. If your mom didn't scold you for leaving a curling iron on, then someday you might accidentally start a fire in the bathroom. Correction can make you smarter - if you pay attention. While it's not fun to be disciplined, learn from it so you don't make the same mistakes again. Just ask your mom.

Prayer Pointer
God, it's no fun getting in trouble at home or at school. Sometimes I think my parents just want to spoil my fun. Let me see how I can learn from my mistakes.

Anger

The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.
Psalm 145:8

It doesn't take much to make an elephant angry. If someone (even another elephant) is threatening its herd, and elephant can run 25 miles an hour to flatten the offender. And their anger doesn't leave quickly. The longest recorded elephant versus elephant fight was 10 hours, 56 minutes.
Elephants are in exactly cuddly creatures. But pachyderm anger is necessary. God gave elephants ferocious, aggressive instincts to physically protect themselves and their families.
Humans, however, or different. The anger can be positive (remember Jesus clearing out the temple?), people often take it too far. Sometimes we feel like we need to tiptoe around friends, siblings, parents, or coaches who seem constantly angry. Or maybe we are that angry.
Sometimes God can be an angry God. But as the ultimate heavenly Father, he doesn't freak out over every mistake. Instead, he shows compassion and grace.( If you were raised in an angry, unforgiving household, it's easy to think that God is like that all the time. But he's not!) He's not eager to smash you under his giant foot. Instead, he's gently waiting for you to return to his loving arms.

Prayer Pointer
God, it's hard to believe you're not angry when I blow it. Will you rewire my heart so I'll realize that you want to help me, not flatten me?

A Gift From God

Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Psalm 127:3

A mom and dad rush to the hospital to have a baby. A day later, they leave with the baby held high in the sky and a big blue ribbon pinned to its blanket. The crowd cheers as they exit the hospital doors. It feels like a big award ceremony.
Okay, so that's not usually what happens when a new baby arrives. And when guests come for dinner, your parents don't dress you up in place you want to podium and say, "Look at our prized daughter." But they could. Parents have every right to be proud of you. Know why?
Children are a reward from God. Whether you are a biological or adopted child, your parents "won" a huge blessing when you came into their lives.

Prayer Pointer
God, thanks for giving me to my parents. I want to act like the reward you say I am. Will you help me do that?

God Is My Rock

My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. Psalm 119: 50

Have you ever felt like things in your life were turning upside down or inside out? Maybe you had to face something completely unfamiliar: a new school, a new neighborhood, a new step-sibling. Maybe you had to learn something painfully: walking on crutches, writing with a cast on your arm, daily treatments for asthma. Life can be full of growing pains.
When things change a lot on the outside or there is turmoil on the inside, it can feel like you're in the middle of a storm. When everything is unpredictable, God should be your oasis from the crazy. When nothing feels stable and everything feels new, God is dependable. His love is rock solid. His presence is unwavering. His comfort wraps around you like a super soft blanket.
Take it from David who wrote Psalm 119. He knew turmoil in his life. His house was sometimes chaotic. Yet in all his messy moments, his lasting, reliable place to run to was the tender, loving heart of God.

Prayer Pointer
Lord, I know you see my messiness and angst. My reassurance is that I can cry out to you and you hear me. Give me wisdom and comfort, Lord.

Praising God

Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.
Psalm115:1

Have you noticed football players praising God in the end zone? As teams fight their way yard after yard, down after down, someone is bound to score a goal. Then right after the goal, it's becoming more and more common to see the player point to the sky, make the sign of the cross, or get down on one knee and bow his head.
Some guys may do that to show off - that they think they are awesome - but many do it to give God the glory. In a very public way, players want to acknowledge that God is the one who made them good at football, the one who gave them the chance to play. They believe in God and this is another way to praise His name.
Why not raise your hands toward heaven after getting an A on a test or winning at a gymnastics meet? Well, maybe that's a bit much, but how can you show praise to God for your accomplishments?

Prayer Pointer
You were worthy of my praise, God. Every time I accomplish something, it is all because of how you made me.

Fill Up

Satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days.
Psalm 90:14

Have you ever noticed that when you're hungry, that's all you can think about? Even if you're trying to listen to someone, a growling stomach seems louder than anything else in the room. An empty stomach won't be ignored until you fill it.
It can be the same when you're spiritually empty. You don't see or hear things clearly until you fill up with God. Remind yourself who God is and what his character is all about. Remind yourself that he's faithful, he listens and loves you. When you fill up on that good news, you can face your day with a clearer perspective, peace, and gladness.
Filling up on God is a regular, daily process, just like we need to fill up on nutrients every day. It's not like you can just eat a whole bunch one week and skip all your meals the next, right? So take some time every day to touch base with God- pray and read his Word. Fill up.

Prayer Pointer
I come to you now, Lord. Fill me up with your faithful love. I know it takes time. So I want to commit to coming to you constantly, looking for spiritual nutrition.

Hurtful Words

My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me and their anger.
Psalm 55: 2 - 3

Can you remember when someone said something mean or hurtful about you? These comments are usually pretty hard to forget. King David didn't like it either. It seems strange that people would dare attack the king. What were they thinking?
When other people attack you, use a David technique to help you deal with it: put it on paper. If like King David, you like to write, then use words to convey what has happened and how you feel. You could write a letter, poem, or a song. If you like painting or drawing, create a picture. Putting it on paper will help you get it out of your heart and head. Then ask God to turn the situation into something good. Like King David, tell God how you feel, how it hurts, how unfair things seem. Remember that you aren't alone, that a powerful and present God has your back. He will help you rise above the insult and move on.

Prayer Pointer
God, it hurts when others see mean things about me. Sometimes I just want to get back at them. Help me to care more about what you say than what others say.
