What or Who is your ‘drug of choice’? Men, I have a question for you: are you a ‘Mary’ or a ‘Martha’? It’s a legit question because all Christians, women and men, fall under one of these two Biblical character descriptions. Mary and Martha were sisters and you can read their story in Luke 10:38-42. To quickly recap, they were hosting Jesus and his disciples in their home. Martha got upset that Mary wasn’t helping her with the meal prep and complained to Jesus. This was His response, “Martha, Martha…you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken from her.” Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet, hanging on every word. This is a picture of intimacy with the Lord. I’m convinced that the greater your spiritual intimacy with God, the greater your ability to resist turning to alcohol, drugs, comfort foods, etc. when the pressures of life overwhelm you. Intimacy produces perspective (God is much bigger than your collective challenges) but , like any relationship, it requires more time than a 10-15 minute daily devotional. Sitting in His Presence for 20-30 minutes, meditating on the key scripture from your daily devotional brings peace and assurance that God is in control and He goes before you. Making time to sit in His Presence will increase your faith and trust in Him. Start today with Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” and watch your love for God and strength in God grow!
