This Sunday, bring your backpack, bookbag, or teaching bag to worship for a special blessing. Everyone will receive a backpack tag as a reminder that they are a beloved child of God, never alone, and always held in our prayers. Bring your bag and invite a friend!

Most of us are better at waiting for our turn to speak than we are at truly listening. We may look attentive, nod at the right moments, even murmur an occasional “mm-hmm,” all while quietly preparing the answer we were planning to give anyway.

This Sunday, Jesus tells a string of parables filled with ordinary things and questionable decisions, each one stranger than it first appears. They don’t offer the safe, sensible answers we might expect.

There are days when we desperately want those answers. We want to know what God is doing, where God is at work, and why the world sometimes seems to offer so much evidence to the contrary.

But listening to God begins before we have everything figured out. It begins with enough humility to admit that we may not have heard the whole story yet, and enough courage to keep listening.

Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Have you ever wondered where God was at work, or even if God was at work?

That isn’t a faithless question. It may be one of the most honest questions we can ask. John the Baptist asked it from prison. God’s people asked it while rebuilding from ruins. And, if we are honest, we ask it too when the news is heavy, when life feels uncertain, or when hope seems to be taking its sweet time.

Zechariah gives us the promise of a king who does not come charging in on a war horse, but riding humbly on a donkey. That king, Jesus, points us toward the signs of God’s kingdom, not always in the places we might expect, but in mercy, healing, welcome, and rest for the weary.

Maybe hope does not always arrive the way we expect, or as soon as we would like. But Christ is still at work, still calling the weary to rest, and still bringing his kingdom near.
