Abundance of Grace Christian Ministries (AGCM) is a non-profit and faith-based organization that provides a tutoring and mentorship program (THINK) for at-risk youths who come from low income families and live in an urban environment. Youths who are identified as low performers on state assessments in math and language arts are enrolled in the Program in hopes of improving these assessments. Accor
ding to MDE (2016), less than 50 percent of students are performing above basic levels on state assessments, which impacts secondary graduation rates and college enrollment. Therefore, there is a great need for tutoring in Jackson, Mississippi. However, in order to get students to achieve academically, they need guidance and support. It is the belief of AGCM that every student can be successful in academics and in life if nurtured with love and compassion. AGCM’s mentoring programs offer young girls and boys an opportunity to connect and learn from loving and caring adults, which sparks the overall success of each individual. Mentorship is an integral part of the educational process, because it helps build character, self-esteem, and social skills that our youth so woefully need. Overall, THINK is designed to promote academic excellence that is supported by loving kind relationships, which blossoms into a culture of learning where all can succeed. My personal goal is to give back to an urban community that rightfully deserves a helping hand in improving state and national assessments, which leads to increased secondary graduation rates as well as increased college enrollment in Jackson Mississippi.
