St. Nicholas Orthodox Christian Church

St. Nicholas Orthodox Christian Church A growing mission of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. Christ is risen!

Our Church traces its roots in unbroken apostolic succession to first century Antioch, the city in which the disciples of Jesus Christ were first called “Christians” (Acts 11:26). The Christian Church is based in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, who has come in to the world as a man for our salvation. This is the foundational belief of every true Christian. “Orthodox

” means right teaching or right worship, and we understand our Orthodox Christian faith to be the full and right revelation of God’s desire for us to believe in Him, know Him, abide in Him and receive eternal life from Him. Services:
Saturday: Vespers at 6PM
Sunday: Divine Liturgy at 10AM

Our Faith and Food Summer Series begins this Wednesday! This June and July we'll be enjoying talks from parishioners on Sacred Living. We'll explore many different ways we find sanctity in our lives, through the lives of the saints, the hymns of the church, and our day to day experience.

We have Vespers (or Paraklesis) at 6 PM on Wednesday nights, followed by a potluck and a talk (from about 7-8 PM). Activities for kids will also be offered. Come pray, eat, and learn together with us this summer!

"O heavenly King, the Comforter, Spirit of Truth, Who art in all places, and fillest all things, Treasury of good things, and Giver of life, come, and dwell in us, and cleanse us from every stain; and save our souls, O good One."

Blessed feast of Pentecost! We celebrated the Liturgy today with the church filled in the green of the Giver of Life. We celebrated the removal of the crowns of the newly married Braden and Courtney Austin. Many years!

Holy Ascension
Of this feast V. Rev. George Florovsky, D.D. writes,
“In the Ascension resides the meaning and the fullness of Christ’s Resurrection. “He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God” (Mark 16:19). And with Christ, man’s nature ascends also.
Heaven received the inhabitants of the earth. “The First fruits of them that slept” sits now on high, and in Him all creation is summed up and bound together. “The earth rejoices in mystery, and the heavens are filled with joy.
Thus the Office for the Feast of the Ascension depicts the mystery in a poetical language. As on the day of Christ’s Nativity the earth was astonished on beholding God in the flesh, so now the Heavens do tremble and cry out. “The Lord of Hosts, Who reigns over all, Who is Himself the head of all, Who is preeminent in all things, Who has reinstated creation in its former order—He is the King of Glory.” And the heavenly doors are opened: “Open, Oh heavenly gates, and receive God in the flesh.” It is an open allusion to Psalms 24:7-10, now prophetically interpreted. “Lift up your heads, Oh ye gates, and be lifted up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty....”
Saint Chrysostom says, “Now the angels have received that for which they have long waited, the archangels see that for which they have long thirsted. They have seen our nature shining on the King’s throne, glistening with glory and eternal beauty.... Therefore they descend in order to see the unusual and marvelous vision: Man appearing in heaven.”
Christ has ascended! From earth to heaven, in glory!

Great Vespers with Litia & Artoklasia for Holy Ascension

The litya, or lity (“supplication”) consists of hymns and prayers, and is prescribed for all of the great feasts and most major feasts as well as all Sundays. At great feasts, the hymns of the litya are all festal.

Artoklasia means, “breaking of bread” and is a short service of thanksgiving and commemoration of the miracle of Christ feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread.
Artos is the bread used during the service of Artoklasia.

"Look down upon Your servants, the catechumens, who have inclined their necks to You, and grant them at a proper time the baptism of rebirth, the remission of sins, and the garment of incorruption. Unite them to Your holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, and number them among Your chosen flock."

On Sunday, the catechumens approached the solea to receive a blessing during the Prayers for the Catechumens immediately after the homily, so that the parish might recognize and pray for all those who are preparing to enter into the Church.
