Day of Pentecost (May 24 this year) is the fiftieth and final day in the Great Fifty Days of Easter. The Church celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit promised by the risen Christ.

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Rogation Days are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday prior to Ascension Day, which is always on a Thursday, forty days after Easter Day. These days are for prayer for crops being planted that they will grow well and bring a successful harvest. Pray for all who grow our food and bring forth the fruits of the earth that fill our plates and stomachs.

Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that your gracious providence may give and preserve to our use the harvests of the land and of the seas, and may prosper
all who labor to gather them, that we, who are constantly receiving good things from your hand, may always give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. But North Carolinians have two other landmark events to observe. On April 12, 1776, three months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Provincial Congress met in Halifax and adopted the “Halifax Resolves,” making North Carolina the first colonial government to call for total independence from England. Later that same year, the Provincial Congress met again in Halifax and adopted the state’s first constitution. Among other provisions, that constitution did away with Anglican establishment.
Halifax, then, is the perfect setting for a History Day devoted to looking at the established church in Colonial North Carolina and the subsequent impact of disestablishment.

We begin the day at St. Mark’s, Halifax, one of our preserved historic churches.

For the morning program, our diocesan historiographer Brooks Graebner and legal historian Charles Plambeck, who teaches at the UNC law school, will trace the social, political and religious developments of 18th-century North Carolina which culminate in the actions of the Halifax congresses of April and December 1776.

The afternoon portion of the program will include a guided walking tour of the Historic Halifax State Historic Site, organized by site manager Carl Burke.

Space is limited, and registration is required. The $25 registration fee covers the cost of lunch and the guided tour. The deadline for registering is April 27.

For questions and further information, please contact Lynn Hoke, archivist of the Diocese of North Carolina.
