MSUMC Faith Community Formation

MSUMC Faith Community Formation We are called to be in a relationship with the communities that surround our churches. We must shift our thinking from fixing churches to true discipleship.

Let's stop fixing churches and start seeing the people God calls us to reach.

🤔God repeatedly calls us to obey His commands. Knowing us like He does, He knows our temptation to depend on ourselves rather than Him, to think that our way is best. As creator, He set guidelines in place to protect and prosper us. As we obey His commands, we find life as He designed it to be lived, and we participate with Him in establishing His kingdom on earth. How will your obedience be a conduit of life to you and others today?

📖Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.—Leviticus 18:5

🙏Prayer: Lord, I confess my tendency to wander from Your ways. Forgive me, and create Your heart within me, a heart that longs to hear and obey your commands. May I find life in obedience, and create an environment where others find life through my obedience. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

When we daily place ourselves in the hands of the Lord Jesus, in His control and His care, we have the assurance that no one can sn**ch us out of His hand. No one and nothing will do that! (John 10:28-29)

🤔What gets in the way of your hearing God’s voice? What gets in the way of your living, loving, and leading like Jesus? Could it be that we ourselves are the barrier that keeps us from hearing from God or having the impact we’d like to have in the world? Jesus lived a life of love for God and love for others. His secret was humble surrender to the Father’s will and the Father’s way.

📖Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!—Philippians 2:6-8

🙏Prayer: Jesus, thank You for showing us through Your life what it looks like to surrender to God. Help me to humbly follow in Your footsteps today. In Your name I pray, amen.

🤔As leaders, we need to receive so that we can give out. Only to the extent that we have received the grace of God will we be able to share it freely. Asking for and accepting God’s forgiveness for our sins is vital to our being able to forgive those around us. Receiving life from God will overflow in life-giving relationships with others. Take time right now to rest in your relationship with God; allow Him to speak to your heart before you reengage with other people.

📖Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.—Luke 5:15-16

🙏Prayer: Jesus, give me the same urgency for connection with the Father that characterized Your life. I can’t be who You’ve called me to be publicly without an ongoing, intimate relationship with You privately. Fill me up so I can freely give. I ask in Your name, amen.

With the Summer travel season waning, the year to come is full of new opportunities. But what if the tried and true approaches you have built your ministry around need to be revised?

Leading like Jesus is not limited to a particular setting. Servant leadership has proven to be an effective leadership strategy in business settings, organizations, churches, and families. Its widespread application comes from focusing on helping people to achieve success in accomplishing a God-given vision for their lives and work. Where has God placed you, and where is He taking you? Everywhere He sends you, lead like Jesus.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”— Acts 1:8

Prayer: Jesus, You have given me spheres of influence where I can witness to You through my leadership. Wherever I am and everywhere You send me, at home, at work, at church, in the community and world, let my life witness to the difference following You can make. In Your name I pray, amen.

🤔When we center our lives on fulfilling our own needs, we lose sight of others, and of God. Like the Israelites, we begin to take credit for meeting our needs in our own strength, and we freely accept the credit for any success that comes our way. In contrast, when our hope and trust are centered in God, we see today in light of eternity, people in light of God’s love, success in light of God’s purpose.

đź“–But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so
confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. —Deuteronomy 8:18

🙏Prayer: Lord, Moses’ challenge to the Israelites is a timeless message, one that I need to hear today. Whether my day holds challenge or success, let me meet each one in the humility and confidence that comes from knowing who You are, and who I am in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

🤔The transformational journey is a lifelong journey that begins with a change of heart and leads to a changed perspective, a changed leadership process, and changed personal practice. It is lived out on a daily basis, with a sense of purpose and expectancy as the servant leader joins God in the work He is doing in the world. How are you living and leading today in light of eternity?

📖“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.—Matthew 24:45-46

🙏Prayer: Lord, as I step into what You have for me today, help me to live in light of Your call. I want to be a faithful and wise servant whose life reveals the transformation You are working in me as I look forward to Your return. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Are you seeking to serve God and the well-being of your family members, or do you pursue your self-interest?

When parents lead like Jesus, they serve God and others with love as the ultimate goal. As a result, children gain character-building skills and self-worth, and family relationships thrive!

🤔What do you need from God in order to live, love, and lead like Jesus? Wisdom, patience, peace, self-control, strength, compassion—whatever you need, He has in abundance. He desires for you to live a life that reflects His presence and His transforming power, and He will graciously provide all the spiritual resources you need as you seek Him. Don’t be shy; don’t hesitate! Ask and receive!

📖“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”—Matthew 7:7-8

🙏Prayer: Lord, thank You for equipping me with all the spiritual resources I need to live a life that reflects You. As I sense my reserves running dry, remind me to ask You to fill me up. I’m grateful that You are at work to make me like Jesus. In His name I pray, amen!

What desire has God put into your heart? Perhaps it is a goal or task to accomplish, a person to invest in, or a character trait you want to develop. Whatever it is, you can rest assured that if God is prompting you to do it, He will be with you to equip you. How can you tell if your heart’s desire is from God? A simple question helps: Will this bring God honor?

Praise be to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, who has put it into the king’s heart to bring honor to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem in this way.—Ezra 7:27

Prayer: Lord God, thank You for placing a desire to honor You within my heart. Remind me to test my desires to make sure that fulfilling them will make You smile. I want to pursue God-honoring desires with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.
