With more than 37 years of engineering leadership, Tommy J. Avant, PE, shares his perspective on building infrastructure that lasts.

Q: What does resilient infrastructure mean to you?
TJA: It means designing for today while anticipating tomorrow—creating safe, durable infrastructure that can adapt and continue serving communities for generations.

Q: How does innovation strengthen civil engineering?
TJA: Innovation helps us find smarter, safer and more efficient solutions. It begins with challenging assumptions and remaining open to better ways of solving problems.

Q: What advice would you give future engineers?
TJA: Build strong technical fundamentals, remain curious and never forget that engineering is ultimately about improving people’s lives.

That is how we build with purpose—and Commit Beyond. ITS THE IMS WAY!
