God is both transcendent and immanent. He is holy, set-apart, and has an "otherness" that humanity should fear and tremble in His presence. His holiness is not to be trifled with. As an example, the rebellion of Adam and Eve in the Garden, Moses and the burning bush, Mt. Sinai, etc. Yet He still makes Himself accessible to us. He is a "God is with us" kind of God who walked with Adam and Eve, spoke to His servants in the past, and ultimately came to us in flesh in the form or His Beloved, Jesus. This creates a tension in our walk with Him. It is a healthy tension but a tension nevertheless. We are not to fear Him so much that we don't seek to have an intimate relationship with Him. Yet we are not to treat His presence and companionship in our lives casually either. Make no mistake. He is a God who comes to us, who seeks and saves that which is lost. But He is also the King and Master of everything from the universe to eternity. What an amazing and awesome God we serve that we should be called His children!

Day 4 Week of Prayer for International Missions: Reach the Lost Through Partnerships - Partnering together, we are better at being able to take the gospel to all nations. Our IMB missionaries need and look for partners to help them accomplish the task that God has called them to. They partner with local believers in the countries and places they work to effectively spread the gospel. They partner with churches here in the USA to help them reach areas and do things that they cannot do. We as churches here in the USA, can partner with our missionaries and their teams through prayers support, financial support, and going on short term trips to work alongside them and helping them accomplish their strategies. "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (Ecc. 4:12, NIV). Please pray today for effective partnerships for our almost 4,000 IMB missionaries. Pray that they finds godly and spirit-filled partners in the places they are working. Pray that we, the church here at home, will be faithful partners in supporting them as well. Pray that we, the church, will hold up our end of being the strong cord! Amen.

Day 3 Week of Prayer for International Missions: Reach the Lost Through Research - 8 billion people in the world today. Estimates are that 7.2 billion are lost. Sadly, almost half of those live in unreached or unengaged areas of the world. This means that not only are they lost, but they have little or no access to the gospel! No missionary among them. No church to proclaim the truth. Maybe even no believers who speak their language! How will they hear? How will they know? Our International Mission Board of the SBC is one key way we can partner to help us find lost people groups, entry points, send missionaries, and ensure that everyone has a chance to hear the good news of Jesus. Everybody ought to know! Pray for our IMB missionaries who are going to the edge of lostness to share. Pray for all our IMB missionaries and staff involved in research in finding the lost groups and developing strategies to bring the light of the gospel to them. Pray that Jesus would be lifted up so high by our IMB missionary teams that the whole world would have the opportunity and privilege to see Him and all His glory. Amen.

Day 2 Week of Prayer for International Missions: Reach the Lost Through Innovation - Pray for Justin and Michaela Knippers today. They are leading the people they are working with to Christ through virtual reality gaming opportunities. They use their gifts and skills in technology to connect with people who are lonely, hopeless, wary of society and looking for ways to find meaning in life. Give thanks to God that our IMB missionaries can be creative in areas like entertainment to impact lostness. Ask God to bless these opportunities and others of our missionaries as they seek to find ways to break into hard soil where the gospel has had difficulty taking root. May God bless the Knippers as they continue in their ministry and in their language learning. May God receive all the glory for this innovative work to share the gospel with the world's lost!

Day 1 Week of Prayer for International Missions: Reach the Lost Through Obedience - Lostness around the world is growing every day. In fact, 59% of the world's population remains unreached. This means there are less than 2% evangelical Christians within their people group or nearby. Unless something changes, they have little or not hope of hearing the gospel in their lifetime. Our missionaries are a steadfast presence among the lost. We pray, give, go, and send. Together we are committed to reaching the lost. In obedience, we will follow the Lord's command to go into all the world. Pray for new initiatives around the world to seek the lost and offer a message of eternal hope. Pray today for our almost 4,000 international missionaries around the world. Also pray how God would use you and me to help them reach a lost and dying world through our giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

Why would God "not go up among" Israel after He gave the command to them to leave Sinai? (read Exodus 33:1-6). God had heard their cries from bo***ge in Egypt. He had sent His deliver Moses and brought them out with His upright hand. He had miraculously led them through the parted sea, provided for them along the way, given them His commandments, and set them apart as a holy nation, treasured possession, and kingdom of priests. So why does God seemingly abandon Israel just a short time later? God's covenant is predicated on His people's obedience. In the short time since they left Egypt, God's chosen people showed that they were more adept at complaining, grumbling, and accusing God's leadership than following and obeying. When God officially gives the details of His covenant with Israel (see Exodus 20-32), He shows them an even greater mercy by saying He would not "go up among" them. You see, God is holy and will not tolerate sin. If He had continued to walk among them and the camp of Israel, His holiness and righteousness would have compelled Him to destroy them because of their disobedience and His covenant relationship with them. God tells them, "You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you..." (Exodus 33:5). We serve a God of grace and mercy but also one of truth and righteousness. His grace and mercy gives us access to umerited salvation through Jesus. His truth and righteousness will not allow us to stay chained to our sins and sinful nature. Who is it that delivers us from ourselves and our sinful nature? Praise be to God through Jesus Christ His Son! Aren't you glad for a merciful and loving God who refuses to leave us as we are? Selah!

When God brings Israel out of captivity from Egypt and takes them to Mt. Sinai, He gives them a preamble, if you will, to the covenant that He is establishing with them. In Exodus 19:5–6, God says that if the sons of Israel will keep God's covenant by obeying His voice, He will make them His treasured possession among all peoples, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation/people. God's covenant is irrevocable because it is established by God. It is a divine agreement with promises contingent on obedience and penalties for disobedience. God is the author, initiator, and fulfiller of His covenants with humanity and nothing in human history can change one iota of God's divine will and plan. I for one am so grateful and thankful that He extended His full covenant love to me through His Son Jesus. The New Covenant ushered in by Jesus, His life, death, burial, and resurrection, in no way makes the Sinai covenant irrelevant. It in essence fulfills the old. The New Covenant through Jesus reveals to us in a new way the plan of God from before the beginning to establish a covenant people for Himself based upon His initiative, His wisdom, His merciful love, and His ultimate plan for the redemption of all creation for His honor and His glory. Where are you in the great story of God's covenant love today? Do you know Him? Have you experienced it? If not, I highly encourage you to turn to Him. He is seeking you to show you His everlasting and eternal love! Believe it or not, the Creator God of all the universe wants to have a personal relationship with you!

In the book of Exodus, there is a great passage (Ex. 2:23-25) where Israel is groaning before the Lord and crying out to Him because of their enslavement and burdens in Egypt. The Bible says that God heard their groaning, God remembered His covenant with them, God saw the people in their suffering, and God knew. Take heart today! He is the same God. Whatever you are going through, whatever trials you face, whatever seemingly insurmountable mountain you are trying to scale, God hears you. He will honor His covenant promises to you. He sees you. And, more than anyone or anything, He knows. You can cast all your cares upon Him because He, above all others, cares for you. Amen.

I am struck by the fact that so much of the book of Genesis is dedicated to the story of the life of Joseph. The last 14 chapters (37 through 50) basically center on Joseph's life, character, and God's work through him whereas the first 36 chapters take us from the story of creation through Jacob/Israel. Perhaps a part of the reason that Joseph's story is so detailed is that God wants to teach us several lessons through Joseph's life example. First, we see a growth in Joseph from a bit of an arrogant young man to a godly man of God. Secondly, we see unwavering loyalty and obedience to God's way (even before the Law is given at Sinai!) where he refuses to fall prey to Potiphar's wife, keeps his faith in God through unjust imprisonment, and never waivers in his faith during the trials which assail him. Third, there is the loving and forgiving spirit which he shows his brothers who had betrayed him to slavery and had even plotted his death. The story of how Joseph reveals himself to his family and then provides a life for them in Egypt while at the same time showing kindness and godly forgiveness shows how much Joseph had grown into God's image through his own struggles. But I think the greatest lesson that Joseph gives us is how much he foreshadows the promise of the One to come, Messiah. Just at Joseph was unjustly treated and suffered, just as Joseph was misunderstood, just as Joseph had every right to exact revenge and yet showed grace and mercy, Jesus was to come as the second Adam, the fulfillment of God's covenant promise, to do the same and much, much more! Whereas Joseph dedicated the living of his life to save his people, Jesus died as the once for all sacrifice to save all peoples. Don't you love the way God's story is woven throughout the Scriptures...how it all connects and tells the great story of His ultimate deliverance and salvation for His people? I do!
