Yes!!! We're preparing to take a group of young men Beyond the Classroom.

A young man may look angry when what he's really feeling is pressure, embarrassment, fear, frustration, stress, grief, or he thinks that nobody understands him.

What he does with those emotions is what matters.

👉🏾 One reaction can become a fight.
👉🏾 One decision can become a court date.
👉🏾 One moment can change what happens next.

That is why coping skills are a first priority at Restoration Hall.

Young men need practical tools for handling it all before emotions lead to negative consequences.

We can warn them about the road.

We also have to teach them how to choose another one.

That's why we implemented Beyond the Classroom. It's not a reward system. We're teaching them and showing them the opportunities beyond where they are today.

Keep an eye out for the details about the trip. And yes, we need your help. Stay tuned.

Looking back: We're grateful to the Jackson Area Rotary Club for welcoming Restoration Hall Inc. Founder and Executive Director Rev. Ted Watkins to share the mission behind “This Ain’t What You Want,” our juvenile intervention program serving young people in Jackson and Clarke County, Alabama.

Restoration Hall believes intervention should happen before juvenile detention becomes the only option.

Through youth mentoring, life skills development, financial literacy, coordinated counseling, positive decision-making support, and community involvement, we work to help young people see that their current circumstances do not have to determine their future.

Ted’s message comes from lived experience, faith, accountability, and a commitment to showing young people another way forward.

Restoration Hall’s work is focused on helping youth build healthy relationships, make better choices, strengthen life skills, and connect with caring adults and community resources.

We appreciate the Jackson Area Rotary Club for helping bring greater awareness to this work and for recognizing the importance of investing in our young people.

Restoring lives. Strengthening families. Building stronger communities...one young person at a time.

"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus….

As I was on my way to VA appointment this morning I rode by the place on Broad St in Mobile, Al where on May 16, 2004 I was about to eat out of dipsy dumpster ( garbage can ) , the dumpster is not physically there because they have upgraded it to a compact machine, but just thinking 🤔 this morning of God grace and how far He has brought me and just a reminder somethings You just don’t FORGET 😢😢😢

I’ve been asked what it takes to invest in a young man.

Sometimes I’m the mentor who picks him up and spends time with him. Letting him talk in a safe space is important. The time doesn’t cost, but the transportation and meals do.

Sometimes, I connect him with professional counseling. That’s a different cost.

The programs and activities each have it’s own dollar amount…a meal before an activity, a workbook and calculator for financial literacy, transportation using the bus to get them to a different resources and activities.

Showing a young man what he does not want (detention, jail, or prison) and what he could have (college, a trade, or even a career) helps him see the possibilities of a future he never considered.

Restoration Hall currently focus is on 1-5 young men. With the growing number of calls, we’re preparing to serve approximately 15–20 young men through this work.

Your financial gift helps put the resources, tools, transportation, instruction, meals, support, and opportunities behind the message.

“This Ain't What You Want” is the warning on the bus.

Your support helps us show them what else is possible.

When the call comes, it’s not always early. Sometimes a young man is already in trouble. The school is calling, a parent is overwhelmed.

And sometimes, the courts are involved. Juvenile detention is becoming a real possibility.

Anger, peer pressure, conflict, drugs, or one bad decision after another has brought everybody to a point where something has to change.

These are not hypothetical situations that young men face. I’m Ted Watkins and those are the calls I get.

Restoration Hall's juvenile intervention work is built for moments like this. We don’t pretend consequences aren't real. “This Ain't What You Want” means exactly what it says.

But a warning without another direction is incomplete.

We’re doing the work. Helping a young man to slow down and understand what’s driving his decisions.

That’s important even before we focus on the next parts of our mission, developing coping skills and accountability.

I help him to start seeing choices and opportunities that he doesn’t even know are available to him.

I also want to reach our young men before the call ever has to be made.

If you know a young man who needs intervention, structure, mentoring, or a different direction, contact me at Restoration Hall.

I'm Ted Watkins. Some know me as GLOOOORY and others as Rev Watkins. I'm the same man, here to help young men because there are other options.

Why would a young man listen to Ted Watkins?

Because I'm not talking to him from a textbook. I lived this life.

Today I may be a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Pastor. But I know what it means when situations trigger something inside you. The choices you make in the moment can take your life in the wrong direction.

Today, I'm a man who has been clean from crack co***ne and alcohol for more than twenty-two years.

I know what it takes to rebuild your life.

That's why when I tell a young man, “This Ain't What You Want,” there's real meaning behind those words.

I can tell young men what not to do. But I also want to reach the one who's already in trouble. The young men headed toward the courts or juvenile detention. The one struggling with anger, pressure, dealing with conflict, or bad decisions.

I know a warning can get a young man's attention, but eventually somebody has to help him figure out what to do next.

That's where Restoration Hall comes in because a better road is still possible.
