An Update from Krisy Ouellette Regarding Pastor Ouellette.
The last 24 hours have been a kaleidoscope of unexpected changes. Sleep evaded me last night so I started to write down my thoughts and pour out my heart to the One who doeth all things well!
Yesterday morning at 8:45, Rene and I walked into the hospital for what we thought would be a simple echocardiogram. Six hours later, he was undergoing emergency brain surgery after doctors discovered two previously unknown, life-threatening brain bleeds.
The doctor said the surgery went well. The larger bleed was addressed, and the pressure on his brain was relieved. He will most likely remain in the hospital for close to two weeks, with the first five days in the ICU. These will be the most critical days as doctors watch for swelling and infection. The other bleed will be monitored because addressing both at once would have caused too much trauma to his brain.
There is still much we don’t know. But there is one thing I know for certain: we have seen the hand of God’s mercy all around us.
While I sat in the waiting room with my sister and brother, we passed the time not only reliving sweet memories from years gone by, but also rehearsing the greatness of our God. In the uncertainty, He reminded me of His faithfulness. In my anxiousness, He gave me peace. In the waiting, He was there.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
— Psalm 46:1
Yesterday morning, I walked into the hospital with Rene.
Hours later, I walked out with our daughter Karissa, who had driven in from Ohio and arrived just in time to visit him before ICU visiting hours ended. He was conscious and mouthed “I love you” as he put his thumb up. We did not stay long due to his condition, kissed him good night and walked toward the parking lot where we were met by the most beautiful cloud formations—a breathtaking display of the handiwork of our Creator. In that moment, it felt as though God had allowed the beauty of His sky to reach down and touch my heart with a quiet assurance of His goodness and care.
Soon after we arrived home, our daughter Katie also arrived, having driven up from Ohio. The three of us embraced, and together we began to rehearse the day—not simply recounting what had happened, but recognizing God’s hand of mercy woven through every part of it.
So much had changed in a matter of hours.
But God had not changed.
“He is the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
— Hebrews 13:8
He was still in control.
He was still loving.
He was still our Comforter.
He was still our Refuge.
And He was still near.
Sometimes the touch of God comes through a surgeon’s hands. Sometimes it comes through the arms of your precious daughters. Sometimes it comes through the presence of a brother and sister sitting beside you in a hospital waiting room. Sometimes it comes from a grandson who calls specifically to pray with his grandma on his grandpa’s behalf. Sometimes it comes through phone calls and friends who show up at the hospital—even when I don’t personally see them—to drop off a Diet Coke and let me know they are praying. Sometimes it comes through opening your front door to find cartons of Diet Coke left by a friend, along with a text expressing concern and assuring you of their prayers.
And sometimes it comes through the quiet assurance that, even when you don’t know what tomorrow holds, you know Who holds tomorrow.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.”
— Psalm 34:18
I don’t know what the next several days will bring. But I do know Who will be with me through every one of them.
“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
— Deuteronomy 33:27
Today we wait.
We pray.
We trust.
Thank you for every prayer being lifted for Rene.
Yesterday was a day we never expected.
But as I look back over those hours, I can see it clearly:
God’s hand of mercy was there.
God’s presence was there.
And For This I Have Jesus
And that is enough for today.
