Dear
Lord
Jesus,
You are sovereign
over all
things. Thank
You for Your
constant love and
unfailing grace. Give me
strength for today, peace for
my heart, and wisdom to walk
in Your will. Amen.

A REFLECTION ON SOVEREIGNTY, GRACE, AND DAILY DEPENDENCE

A simple prayer can sometimes carry the weight of an entire life. The words in this devotion form a quiet confession—an acknowledgment that the human heart is limited, fragile, and often overwhelmed, while Christ remains unchanging, sovereign, and steadfast. To call Jesus “sovereign over all things” is not poetic exaggeration; it is a recognition of a truth that anchors the Christian life. His authority extends beyond circumstances, emotions, and uncertainties. Every breath unfolds within His providence.

The prayer expresses gratitude for “constant love and unfailing grace,” two realities that form the backbone of Christian spirituality. Human love fluctuates, and human effort fails, yet divine love does not waver. Grace does not exhaust itself. This constancy is not merely comforting—it reshapes how believers interpret the world. Life’s unpredictability becomes less threatening when viewed through the lens of an unchanging God.

The request for “strength for today” carries practical wisdom. Scripture consistently highlights the idea of daily dependence. Strength is not given in bulk; it is given as needed. The heart that asks for strength one day at a time acknowledges that it is neither self-sufficient nor meant to be. Peace, too, is not a passive feeling but a rooted confidence in God’s presence, especially amid internal noise or outward chaos.

Finally, the plea for “wisdom to walk in Your will” cuts to the core of Christian discipleship. Wisdom is more than knowledge; it is the discernment required to align one's actions with God's purposes. To walk in His will is to live with attentiveness, humility, and courage. It requires surrender of personal agendas and trust in divine guidance even when the path seems unclear.

Together, these lines form a prayer that is both tender and resilient. It names God’s sovereignty, celebrates His love, and acknowledges the human need for divine help. It is the kind of prayer that steadies the heart and refocuses the mind, inviting a deeper relationship with Christ.

The beauty of this reflection lies in its simplicity: it teaches believers to turn daily, consistently, and honestly to the One who never changes.

St. Nicholas reminds us of quiet generosity. Lord, help us share compassion freely today. St. Nicholas, pray for us!

How did St. Nicholas become a legend of charity?

Saint Nicholas took on the yoke of Christ at a young age, nourishing himself by prayer and charity.

When his parents tragically passed, Nicholas inherited their fortune and sought his uncle, the Bishop of Patara. His uncle ordained him, and Nicholas devoted himself to giving away his entire inheritance.

On one special occasion, he saved three daughters of a poor man from prostitution by dropping a bag of gold through their window each night. This was the origin of the tradition of gift-giving associated with Saint Nicholas on his feast day and around Christmas time.

As the Bishop of Myra, Nicholas was the last bastion of truth against Arianism, and his diocese alone was untouched by the poisons of heresy. After death, Nicholas was blessed with an incorrupt body that poured forth sweet myrrh, and this “manna of Saint Nicholas” still flows to this day.

Saint Nicholas, pray for us!

Today we remember a saint whose life was marked by hidden generosity, bold faith, and a deep love for the poor. May his example inspire us to give without counting the cost!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"The giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic God's giving, by grace, through faith, and this is not of ourselves.”

- St. Nicholas of Myra

St. Nicholas' feast day is Dec. 6. One of the most famous stories of his generosity says that he threw bags of gold through an open window in the house of a poor man to serve as dowry for the man’s daughters. The gold is said to have landed in the family’s shoes, which were drying near the fire. This is why children leave their shoes out by the door, or hang their stockings by the fireplace in the hopes of receiving a gift on the eve of his feast.

Along with marking the beginning of Advent, on November 30, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle. Since Advent starts on the Sunday closest to November 30, St. Andrew's feast is always tied to it. It gives us an opportunity to remember St. Andrew's example and reflect on our own call to follow Christ. On this day, we begin praying the St. Andrew Novena, also known as the Christmas novena. Prayed daily until Christmas Eve, the novena consists of a short, meditative prayer which is intended to be repeated 15 times and may be followed by the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be: Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of his blessed mother. Amen.
