🌿 Monday Devotional: Examples to the Flock 🐑
📜 “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—
not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;
not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve” (1 Peter 5:2).
The word flock matters here because Scripture often uses it to describe God’s people under the care of a shepherd.
Peter is reminding us that the people around us are not just responsibilities or roles to manage;
they are people God has trusted us to Care for Well. 🤲
Another way to look at it is this:
When God places people in our lives,
whether through family, ministry, friendship, leadership, or missions,
there is a Responsibility that comes with that relationship.
We are called to care for them in a way that reflects the heart of Christ. ♥️
That kind of care asks something of us.
It asks us to pay attention to more than what is obvious.
It asks us to listen well,
to notice when someone is struggling,
and to be willing to step into another person’s need without making the moment about ourselves.
This care should be given willingly,
not grudgingly and not because of what we might receive in return.
That challenges us to look honestly at the posture of our own hearts.
Serving others can become routine, inconvenient, or even exhausting,
but the invitation is still to serve from a place of love rather than obligation.
This is one of the reasons the picture of a shepherd is so meaningful.
A shepherd has to remain close enough to the flock to know what is happening within it.
Care cannot happen well from a distance.
When we spend time with brothers and sisters in another country,
we are not simply entering a place to complete a project or meet a list of needs.
We are entering relationships.
We are learning names, hearing stories, recognizing burdens, sharing encouragement, and discovering again that the Body of Christ is much larger than the part we see every week.
Sometimes we are given the opportunity to help carry someone else’s burden.
Other times, their faith and perseverance end up strengthening our own.
Both can be part of caring for the flock;
And all of it reminds us that Jesus is still the Great Shepherd!
🙏 Dear Heavenly Father,
Lord, thank You for the people You have placed in our lives and for the trust that comes with those relationships.
Teach us to care for others with patience, humility, and a willing heart.
Help us to listen before assuming,
notice what is often overlooked,
and serve without needing recognition in return.
As we build relationships with brothers and sisters across the world,
help us remember that we are not separate from one another.
We belong to You, and we are part of the same flock under the same Shepherd.
May the way we lead, serve, and care for others reflect the heart of Christ more clearly.
