Why I love St Mark's Episcopal Church
by Augustus Argrett

My wife moved to Mississippi from Northern Virginia during Y2K in 2000. I was moving down two months later. No family, no friends, just two strangers in a new land. Prior to our arrival, Sekila, my wife, contacted the Mississippi Diocese looking for a black church. She was given St. Mark's in Jackson. On one visit, Father Herbert took her aside and started a conversation with her. He encouraged her to come back and participate in the choir. She joined the choir. The ladies in the choir took an interest in her, and with each subsequent visit, St. Mark's started to feel like "home." St Mark's is a small church that will take in a stranger and make them feel like family.

A Prayer for Students Returning to School

Eternal God, bless all students beginning a new school year. Give them curiosity, perseverance, and kindness. Bring them joy in their learning, and courage when they doubt themselves. Let them enjoy successes humbly and learn from failures graciously. Keep them safe from all harm. And help them to hold the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, in their hearts. Amen

The Mississippi School for Mathematics & Science is seeking your help to recruit 90 Black and African American youth (including those of African and Afro-Caribbean descent) for the 2021 “AAYME for Success” residential camp—an initiative of the MSMS African American Youth of Mississippi Excelling (AAYME) Program.

AAYME is a personal and academic enrichment program designed specifically for rising 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. The mission of AAYME is to enhance the future of Mississippi by helping African American students achieve their full potential through personal, social, professional, and leadership development. The goal of the AAYME camp is to:
1. Build and/or enhance self-awareness and confidence of African American students.
2. Expose students to various college and career opportunities.
3. Provide support for students to be more competitive for scholarships and programs (academic enrichment, ACT/SAT prep, test taking strategies).
4. Build personal and professional skills.

For the first time since Gallup began asking the question in 1937, fewer than half of U.S. adults interviewed said they belonged to a church, synagogue or mosque. That figure is down from 70% in 2000.

In 1793, a yellow fever epidemic shook Philadelphia, the new nation’s capital. Many residents, including medical practitioners, fled the city. In their absence, Richard Allen and Absalom Jones of the Free African Society marshaled their organization’s members to provide free care to the sick and dying.

Join us at 4pm ET today as curators and historians explore this moment in our nation's history during our virtual Pandemic Perspectives program. The live program is free with registration: https://s.si.edu/pandemic-perspectives
