"He answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them." (2 Kings 6:16).**

**This is always the case with each and every believer under the blood of the Lamb! We are to fear not because our Great God is above all, over all and undertakes for us all in every situation and every circumstance. Therefore, Fear not brethren! DD

Yes Father

(Psalm 31:15), "My times are in Your hand!"

Here is the secret of strength in encountering our seasons of trial and difficulty: the conviction that our times are in the hand of God; thus leading to complete and entire subordination of our wills to His.

How it would disarm affliction and bereavement of their bitterest stings, if we were enabled to give as the history of our darkest times: "This is my heavenly Father's will. This hour has come, as the hour appointed by His loving wisdom."

The Christian, like his Lord, is able to view every circumstance as emanating from . . .
a hand of infinite love,
a mind of infinite wisdom,
and a will of infinite faithfulness.
Every phase in his history; every step in his pilgrimage; its most trifling incidents and circumstances; are each Divinely appointed. Feeling that he is under this kind and gracious guardianship, the Christian resolves his own will, into the will of the Supreme One! All that concerns him, is a part of His Father's vast harmonious plan.

The future (mazy, dark, and mysterious) is fully known to the One who causes all things to work for good to His redeemed people--bringing good out of apparent evil, and order out of apparent confusion.

Even when a cross looms gloomily on his path, he breathes with unmurmuring lips, "Yes Father, for this was Your good pleasure!" (Matthew 11:26).

The eye of Divine Providence

(Matthew 10:29-30). "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered."

Let us learn to see and acknowledge God's hand in all we have, and in all we meet with. Such a deep and abiding persuasion of the Most High God, ordering and over-ruling all our concerns, would, like the light, diffuse a luster and a beauty upon everything around us! To consider every comfort of life, as an effect and proof of God's mercy towards us, would, like the fabled magic stone--turn all our possessions to gold, and stamp a value upon things which a common eye might judge as insignificant.

The eye of Divine Providence is upon every flitting sparrow of the field. We cannot properly term any circumstance of our lives as small, since such things as seem most trifling in themselves, often give birth to things which become most important.

On the other hand--to be able to discover the wisdom and goodness of our heavenly Father, through the darkest cloud of troubles and afflictions; to see all our trials as appointed to us--in number, weight, and measure; nothing befalling us by chance; nothing without a needs-be; nothing without a divinely designed advantage--what a support must this be to the soul!

Take away this truth of Divine Providence--and man is the most forlorn, helpless and miserable object in the world! He would be pining for everything he has not--and trembling for everything he has! He would be equally suffering under the pressure of what does happen--and the fear of what may happen! He would be liable to thousands of unsuspected dangers--yet unable to guard against those which are most obvious!

Let us learn the secret of being content in any and every situation: "Our heavenly Father knows what we have need of, before we ask Him!" "The earth is His, and the fullness thereof;" and His goodness is equal to His power.

In Jesus, He has already given us more than ten thousand worlds!

Are you poor? Be satisfied with the Lord's appointment. It would be as easy to Him to give you a large estate--as to supply you with the bread you eat, or to continue the breath in your nostrils. He knows that poverty is best for you; and that prosperity would prove to be your ruin! Therefore He has appointed you the honor of being in this respect, conformable to your Savior, who, when on earth, "had nowhere to lay His head!"

God's Providence
(Jeremiah 10:23)

*God's Providence and Worry: A clear understanding and firm conviction of God's absolute control over all and in all delivers a soul from anxiety and worry over what has happened, is happening, and shall yet happen.

*God's Providence and Worship: We cannot truly worship the living God without faith and assurance that He truly is God in everything.

*God's Providence and Witness: Not a verb, but a noun, not what I do but what I am, how I come across to others. Do they see a hypocritical, religious front, or do they see Christ in me, my hope of glory?

*God's Providence and Willingness: Let others be what God makes them, trust His providence.

'He doth not afflict willingly'
(Lamentations 3:33)

Our afflictions do not flow from sovereignty, but from our Father's wisdom, holiness, and love. He finds no pleasure in our pains, groans, and sighs. He is never hasty in using the rod; mercy flies to help us, but He is slow to anger and of great kindness. He never afflicts us without a sufficient cause; either sin has been committed, duties neglected, mercies slighted, warnings despised, temptations trifled with, or danger is near. He never afflicts without a good and gracious intention, to make us fear, loathe, and flee from sin; to show His disapprobation of our unholy course; to quicken us in His ways; to make us long for, seek and partake of His holiness; to produce contrition and godly sorrow; or to prove that His authority is not surrendered because His love is great. He only afflicts partially, occasionally and sparingly. He always strikes in love, and aims at our spiritual welfare and we are often more benefited by afflictions, than we are by comforts and joys. O Saviour, sanctify to me every afflicting stroke.

"Should it be according to your mind?" (Job 34:33)

We are prone . . .
to be fretful,
to complain of the dispensations of Divine Providence,
and to reflect harshly upon the Lord's dealings with us.

We want our own way.

We wish to carve for ourselves.

We would be treated as God's favorites.

We want our ease, and prosperity, and pleasure, consulted in all things. And . . .
if this does not appear to be done,
if our wills are crossed,
if our schemes are frustrated,
if our purposes are broken off,
then we stumble, think ourselves badly treated, and look for everybody to sympathize with us.

Under these circumstances, God comes to us as we sit among our broken cisterns, surrounded by our dethroned idols, and puts this question to us: "Should it be according to your mind?"

Are you wiser than God?

Are you kinder than God?

Are you holier than God?

Are you more just than God?

Are you better informed than God?

May not your mind be dark, or selfish, or foolish?

Should it then be according to your mind?

Should you reign--or God?

Remember that . . .
God acts in the highest wisdom,
His motives are grace and justice,
and all His purposes are worthy of Himself.

The least the Christian can do is to submit, and to prefer God's perfect wisdom, ways, and works--to his own. Seeing God has so arranged all events, that all things must work together for the good of His people--they, at least, should daily say, "Father, may Your will be done!"

O my soul, seek grace from God, not only to submit and be resigned to the dispensations of Divine Providence, but to acquiesce in them, and be pleased with the whole of them! Your good is consulted; your best interests are secured. Soon, very soon, it will be seen that infinite wisdom and mercy, grace and goodness--have marked out every step of your road!

"Jesus replied: You do not understand what I am now doing, but someday you will." (John 13:7).

Carry all your concerns to Him, in the arms of faith!

“Casting all your care upon Him, because He cares for you!” (1 Peter 5:7)

The Lord knows all His people--all their needs, and all their trials.

He thinks upon them--to bless, deliver and supply them.

He keeps His eye upon them--in all places, at all times, and under all circumstances.

He has them in His hand--and will not loosen His hold.

He looks upon them always as His own ‘treasured possession’ . . .
the objects of His eternal love,
the purchase of His Son’s blood,
the temples of His Holy Spirit.

They are precious in His sight!

He knows they are weak and fearful, and that they have many enemies. He teaches them to cast themselves and all their cares into His hands! And He has given them His promise--that He will care for them.

It is a Father’s care which He exercises.
It is a wise, holy, tender, and constant care.
Therefore all will be well with you--only trust Him.

Believe that He cares for you this day. Carry all your concerns to Him, in the arms of faith! Leave all with Him, persuaded that He will manage all by His infinite wisdom, and bring all to a good outcome by His omnipotent power.

Cast all your cares upon Him--as fast as they come in.

Do not worry about anything.

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will support you!
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken!" (Psalm 55:22).

Doggie still went to the meeting-house!

(Luke 5:32), "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."

Dear friend, if you have been praying for a long time for the salvation of one who is near and dear to you, and your prayer has not been answered, and that person has even gone from bad to worse--then I want you to never give up praying. Remember that Jesus can save any man, while he is yet out of Hell. No case is absolutely hopeless, while Jesus lives.

We sometimes meet with amazing instances where prayer is answered at last. I have read of a woman who prayed long for her unsaved husband. She used to attend a certain meeting-house in the north of England, but her husband never went with her. He was a drinking, swearing man, and she had much anguish of heart about him. She never ceased to pray, and yet she never saw any result. She went to the meeting-house alone, and her dog always went with her. This faithful animal would curl himself up under her seat, and lie quiet during the service.

When she was dead, her husband was still unsaved, but doggie still went to the meeting-house. Curiosity made him follow the dog one Sunday. The dog led him down the aisle to the seat of his dear old mistress. The man sat on that seat, and the dog curled himself up as usual. God guided the minister that day; the Word came with power, and that man wept until he found the Savior.

Never give up hope for your loved ones; for the Lord may even use a dog to bring them to Jesus, when you are dead and gone. Never give up praying, hoping, and expecting.

Others have been converted to God under very extraordinary circumstances. Two vile fellows planned to rob the house of a minister, who was accustomed on Sunday evenings to gather people together in his parlor, and preach the gospel to them. The thieves thought that if they could get into the house with the people during the evening, and hide themselves away--then they could rob the house easily during the night; and so they snuck into the room next to that in which the Word was being preached. But they never robbed that house, for through the godly minister's sermon, the Lord Jesus conquered their hearts, and they came forth to confess their sin, and to become followers of the Savior!

Let the same truth be fully believed as to yourselves. O my dear reader, you may think you have gone too far into sin to be saved, but you have not. You may imagine that your case is altogether hopeless; but you are just the sort of person that Jesus saves.

"This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst." (1 Timothy 1:15).
C.H. Spurgeon

The Christian’s compass and chart

(Psalm 119:11), “Your Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”

The Psalmist deposited the precepts and promises of God in his heart, and proved their value and efficacy . . .
to preserve him from sin,
to comfort him in trouble,
and to cheer him in a dying hour.

Just so, Christians must “let the Word of Christ dwell in them richly, in all wisdom.” This/He will preserve them from sin, and make them wise unto salvation.

The Word must be deposited in our hearts, and woven into our natures--by carefully reading and meditating upon it. “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.” (Joshua 1:8).

The Word is the perpetual standard of all moral excellence.
All its precepts tend to purity.
Its doctrines present the most powerful motives against sin.

When the Christian looks at the sufferings and death of the Redeemer . . .
in His intense agony,
in His bloody sweat,
in His transfixing on the cruel cross,
in the desertion of His Father,
in the endurance of the penalty of sin,
then he sees in all these unparalleled sorrows, “the exceeding sinfulness of sin!”

Why is he redeemed? “Christ gave Himself for us--to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good!” (Titus 2:14).

Why is he regenerated? “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Why is he adopted into God’s family--but to bear the image of Him who adopts.

What is the tendency of all the doctrines of grace which he has received? “For the grace of God . . . teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age!” (Titus 2:11-12).

Why is he preserved? “May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Thessalonians 5:23). “But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation!"(Colossians 1:22).

Above all, when he contemplates the character of his Savior . . .
His ardent love,
His ineffable meekness,
His profound humility,
and His perfect obedience,
then he perceives such a bright constellation of virtues, that he is dazzled by their splendor, and longs and prays to be impressed with the image and likeness of Jesus.

Thus the Word of God is hidden in his heart . . .
as his counselor,
as his guide,
as his pattern!

The Word of God is the Christian’s compass and chart, by which he is steered safely over the tempestuous ocean of life!

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

William Nicholson (1862).

Search the Scriptures!

The word Bible signifies Book; and when we call it the Bible, we mean that it is the Book of books--the best Book, the wisest Book, the Book that will do us the most good of any in the world!

If all the other books in the world were destroyed, however great and irreparable the loss--if men still had the Bible, they would be far better off than if it were destroyed, and all other books remained.

It is the Book that alone can tell . . .
how sin can be forgiven,
how temptation can be overcome,
how trouble and sorrow can be met,
how tears can be wiped away, and
how death can be the gate of everlasting life.

It is indeed the best companion . . .
for days of trial,
for the day of sickness, and
for the hour when we must part from all below!

Oh what a treasure is a well-read Bible! It is . . .
a mine of gold,
a hive full of honey,
a field covered with a rich harvest.
It is a tree of life, of which every twig bears precious fruit.
It is an ocean full of pearls.
It is a river full of the purest water of life.
It is a sun whose beams warm and cheer the heart.
It is a bright star that can guide the pilgrim through the darkest night.
It is a granary stored with the finest of wheat.
It is a medicine-chest, from which we may find a remedy for every malady of the soul.
It is a Mount Pisgah, from which we can view the promised land of Canaan.
All this and much more, is the Bible to those who love to search it and explore the depths of heavenly wisdom which it contains.

Dear friend, whatever you forget--never, never forget to read something out of this precious Book day by day.

The Scriptures warn against . . .
the fear of man,
the allurements of worldly pleasures,
the snare of pride,
and the temptation of doubt and unbelief.

Search the Scriptures! Whatever you have done hitherto, begin now to search them daily as for hidden treasures!
Go deep into this precious mine.
Ponder what you read.
Compare the commands and precepts with your own daily life.
Bring its promises to bear on your heart and trials.

When we read the Scriptures, we should pay good heed to it. There are depths and heights in many of the simplest verses, that we can never reach. Therefore we ought to turn them over again and again in our minds. We must mark, learn, and inwardly digest them. A few verses or even a single verse well thought over; and still better, well prayed over--will bring more profit and help than many chapters listlessly or carelessly read!

“When Your Words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight.” (Jeremiah 15:16).

George Everard (1878)

When we cannot grasp His ways

(John 13:7), “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”

There is infinite mercy in that gentle correction of Jesus to Peter. The Lord was stooping to wash the feet of His disciples--a task far beneath His dignity, but not beneath His love. Peter objected, unable to reconcile this lowly act with the majesty of the One he knew to be the Son of God. But Jesus silences Peter’s protest, not with an explanation, but with a quiet assurance: “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”

This assurance is not for Peter only. It is for every believer who walks through the shadowy mysteries of God’s providence. In the Lord’s dealings with His redeemed people, there is much that is concealed--and rightly so. Our finite minds cannot trace the lines of His infinite wisdom. What He hides from us is not meant to wound us, but to humble us, teach us, and draw us to trust Him. It is not ours to demand the explanation of God’s dealings with us. It is ours to say, “It is the Lord! Let Him do what is good in His sight.”

To pry into the hidden counsels of the Almighty, is both presumption and folly. The Judge of all the earth will do right--even when we cannot yet comprehend it. Shall the clay rise up to challenge the Potter? Shall dust and ashes cross-examine the Most High? Faith bows and adores. Faith says, “Though He slays me, yet I will hope in Him.” God’s providences may appear darksome to us, but they are never erring. All must be right--because He does it.

And what is true in providence is even more true in grace. Why did God choose us, the most unlikely and unworthy? Why were we made to hear His voice, while others were left to perish in their sins--many of them more moral than we? Why was the Holy One made sin for us? Why was the Darling of Heaven crushed for our guilt? These are questions too high for us now. But afterward, we shall understand. One day, faith will give way to sight, and we will behold the tapestry of divine wisdom, woven with threads of mercy and justice.

Until then, let us be content to walk by faith, and not by sight. Let us trust the loving heart of our heavenly Father, even when we cannot grasp His ways. He is too wise to be mistaken, and too loving to be unkind. Let the child of God be still. The Lord knows what He is doing. Afterward we shall understand. C.H. Spurgeon
