We are honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Raedorah C. Stewart as our featured virtual guest as we discuss her inspiring book, Hear the Spirit: Ritual Poems & Radical Litanies.

Together, we'll explore womanist theology, faith, resistance, poetry, and the power of bold voices in today's world. Following the interview, there will be time for discussion, reflection, and community conversation.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, the day when enslaved African descended people in Texas were emancipated in 1865. The announcement of Freedom came for them later, but it came and for that we celebrate and continue the work that leads to true freedom for all. Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth is an often overlooked event in our nation’s history. On June 19, 1865, Union troops freed enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay and across Texas some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

We Remember. We Rise. We Continue the Work.

Ten years ago, nine precious souls were taken from us at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina — gathered in fellowship, in prayer, in the sanctuary that should have been their safety.

We speak their names and hold them in our hearts forever:
Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney · Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd · Susie Jackson · Ethel Lee Lance · DePayne Middleton-Doctor · Tywanza Sanders · Daniel Simmons Sr. · Sharonda Coleman-Singleton · Myra Thompson

Their lives were a testament to faith, service, and love. They did not stop doing the work of God — and neither shall we.

At St. Mark AME Church of Jackson Heights, we are called to carry their legacy forward — to love boldly, to serve tirelessly, to stand against hatred, and to be the hands and feet of Christ in this community. Grief does not end our mission. It deepens it.

As we remember, we also recommit. We recommit to justice. To unity. To the kingdom work that no act of evil can silence.

The HeartSmarts Community Education series continues on Tuesday, June 9 at 7:00PM (EST) on Zoom with Shereta Middleton who will be completing a mid-year goals workshop focused on cardiovascular health and Summer 2026 HeartSmarts programs kick-off.
