Yes, it's Memorial Day weekend 2024 - - a time to pause, reflect, and be ever so grateful to remember and honor those brave men and women who gave their all so that we can wrap ourselves in a warm blanket of freedom every day and night. May we never forget.
We remember and honor family members, friends, loved ones, and buddies who have lost their lives while serving in our nation's military, but also emergency responders - - police, fire and rescue, medical personnel, missionaries; the list goes on almost infinitum.
It's up to you and me to make our children and grandchildren well aware of the importance of remembering our fallen heroes. We all need to learn our history and the sacrifices that have been made for the freedoms we all too often take for granted.
As great a love as it is for a person to lay down his/her life for our country to protect and serve us human beings. there is One Who demonstrated a great love never matched. That One Person is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Who gave His Life for us. Christ willingly made Himself the ultimate sacrifice needed to redeem, cleanse, and reconcile us sinners with God.
Memorial weekend isn't just a 3-day weekend at the beach, time off from work or school, or even a picnic with family and friends - - it's a time of reverence and gratitude. May we never forget...

The gorgeous flower arrangements were given in memory of former church members as well as dedicated to all who attended this year. The arrangement is from Stallings Florist in Wallace, NC. Perfect to grace our Sanctuary on such a special day.
Guest pianist, Barbara Gurganious Schultz, was baptized and raised at Black River Presbyterian (shown at the piano). We appreciate Barbara's God-given talent and traveling to play on homecoming Sunday.

Black River Presbyterian Church Homecoming 2024 was a huge success where approximately 90 good folks worshipped God, enjoyed a bountiful meal on the church grounds, delighted in visiting with one another, toured the historic church and grounds, and tapped their feet to the bluegrass gospel band.
Rain showers stopped as we all met and ate together to the Glory of God on this historic and holy ground. Church Elders and so many others made this annual event a true blessing to all.

Reverend George Slaton brought an impressive message along with a rich history of the church and Black River.

Yes, it's Homecoming celebration time at Black River Presbyterian Church this Sunday, May 5th, 2024, our 284th year. If there should be a shower of rain, don't worry; we'll have a large white tent available which will seat many good folks; plus there's Fellowship Hall - - plenty of room and seating.
Reverend George Slaton will preach from Hebrews and Ephesians with his sermon entitled "We Are What He Has Made Us"; Randy Hawse and his popular bluegrass gospel band (Randy has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry) return this year along with Ivanhoe native, Barbara Gurganious Schultz, as guest pianist. Lots of delicious food immediately following worship, visiting with old friends and making new ones. You'll enjoy seeing past historical photos in Fellowship Hall and touring our historic and well-kept cemetery. Many of you have meaningful and precious ties to the church.
So, come on home to our Homecoming worship at 11 AM and a bountiful lunch at Noon. You'll be warmly welcomed. With prayers to all for lasting blessings and safe travel. We truly look forward to seeing you on Sunday!!

Memorial Day is not just a long weekend; it's a time to pause and remember, with deepest gratitude, those men and women who paid the ultimate price while serving our great nation.
The idea of Memorial Day originated around 1868 during the years following the Civil War. Called "Decoration Day", it was a time to decorate graves and honor the fallen soldiers. This tradition continued and developed into Memorial Day which is now celebrated on the last Monday in May of each year.
Do consider flying our flag; it's a symbol of our freedom and should be displayed. You can place a flag on your house, in your yard, or even inside your home. Also, Memorial Day is a perfect opportunity to teach our children and grandchildren about honoring and respecting the American flag. Saying the Pledge of Allegiance, learning the proper way to care for a flag, singing songs about the flag, or reading books about our fallen soldiers are wonderful ways for us all to remember.
Yes, Memorial Day is a day of national unity, of remembrance, a day of gratitude, and a time to say "Thank You" as we reflect on the meaning of the day. We are "The Land of the Free because of the Brave!!"
After all, our dear Savior, by the Grace of The Father, gave His life for us all, giving us freedom from our sins and the promise of eternal life. John 15: 13: "Greater love hath no one than this: that he lay down his life for his friends."
Join us at Black River Presbyterian in Ivanhoe any 1st and 3rd Sunday for 11 AM worship, and have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend as we honor and remember, with deep reverence and gratitude, those brave humans who indeed made the ultimate sacrifice for us as we say a genuine "Thank You; well done, good and faithful servant."
