This past Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi and the 800th Anniversary of his Transitus.

The word Transitus means “passing over” or “passing through.” In the Franciscan tradition, it refers to the passing of St. Francis from this earthly life into eternal life with God. St. Francis died on October 3, 1226, and the Church commemorates his Transitus each year as a reminder of his joyful trust in God and his longing to be united with Him.

As we gathered for the Blessing of the Animals, we were reminded of St. Francis’s deep love for all of God’s creation. May we follow his example in recognizing the goodness of God reflected in the world around us and in treating all of His creatures with gratitude, gentleness, and care.
