Join the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Diocese of Rockville Centre in prayer as our nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

From June 3 to 11, Catholics around the country are invited to pray the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in their homes, parishes, and schools as spiritual preparation for the June 11 consecration of the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The novena draws its daily devotions from the Litany of the Sacred Heart and reflects on the wisdom of saints and pontiffs, framed by Pope Francis’ "Dilexit Nos" and Pope Leo XIV’s "Dilexi Te". Each day offers opportunities for prayer, reflection, and action, inviting us to contemplate Christ’s love through themes such as mercy, justice, and humility.

As spring brings new life and beautiful blooms, the Church invites us to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout the entire month of May. But why May?

The custom of honoring Mary in May has roots stretching back to the Middle Ages. In the 13th century, people began offering special prayers and devotions to Our Lady during this time of year.

By the 18th century, the Jesuits popularized structured May devotions, and it spread rapidly. Pope Pius XII reinforced this beautiful tradition in the 20th century.

May is filled with rich meaning:

🌹 It’s a month of renewal and beauty — just like Mary, the Mystical Rose, who brings us closer to the light of Christ

🌹 Spring flowers remind us of Mary’s virtues: purity, grace, and gentle strength

🌹 Many important Marian events happened in May, including the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, 1917

Mary is our loving Mother and powerful intercessor. This month is a special opportunity to grow closer to her and through her to Jesus.

-------------------
This May, let’s:
🙏 Pray the Rosary daily
🌹 Crown Mary in our homes with flowers or prayers
❤️ Offer small acts of love and sacrifice for her intentions
💙 Consecrate our families to her Immaculate Heart

“O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May!” 🌸

Who’s dedicating this month to Our Lady? Drop a 🌹 in the comments and share how you honor her!

While the Blessed Virgin Mary has appeared many times throughout history, apparitions of St. Joseph are rarer—yet profoundly moving. He comes quietly, protectively, always pointing us to Jesus and Mary.

Here are some of the most notable occasions:

✨ Cotignac, France – June 7, 1660

The only Church-approved solo apparition of St. Joseph. On a scorching day, 22-year-old shepherd Gaspard Ricard was dying of thirst. A tall, noble man appeared and said:

“I am Joseph. Lift this rock and you will drink.”
Gaspard obeyed — and a miraculous spring gushed forth! Eight men later could barely move the same rock. The spring still flows today, bringing healing and devotion to the Holy Family. The site is a recognized sanctuary.

✨ Knock, Ireland – August 21, 1879

During a pouring rain, 15 witnesses saw a silent heavenly tableau on the gable of the parish church: Our Lady, St. Joseph (bowing respectfully toward her), St. John the Evangelist, and the Lamb of God on an altar with angels. No words were spoken — the image itself was the message of consolation during famine and persecution. Fully Church-approved.

✨ Fatima, Portugal – October 13, 1917

During the Miracle of the Sun, as 70,000 people watched, St. Joseph appeared with the Child Jesus beside Our Lady. Both blessed the world with the Sign of the Cross. Sister Lucia later described it as a powerful sign of St. Joseph’s protection over the Church in difficult times.

St. Joseph also appeared with Jesus and Mary in the approved apparitions at Itapiranga, Brazil (1994–1998), encouraging devotion to his Most Chaste Heart.
Why does he appear?

✅ St. Teresa of Ávila, who had many personal visions of him, wrote: “I know by experience that the glorious St. Joseph helps us in all kinds of necessities… To other saints, Our Lord seems to have given the grace to help us in some particular necessity. But this glorious saint, I know by experience, helps us in every need.”

He is the model of silent strength, chaste love, and total trust in God’s Providence.

Surprising to some, but Saint Joseph was actually the very first Marian devotee. He gave his entire life—his heart, strength, and silent fidelity—to Mary and to the Divine Child she carried.

He never sought the spotlight. His mission was to quietly protect, guide, and point every heart toward Jesus… through Mary.

In the beautiful tradition of Josephology, we see him like the sacred tent that sheltered the Ark of the Covenant: shielding Mary’s holy presence while revealing God’s closeness to His people.

Through Joseph → to Mary → to Jesus.

That’s why true devotion to St. Joseph never competes with Our Lady. It completes it. He gladly steps aside so we can honor her even more—because that’s exactly what he did his whole earthly life.

As Pope Leo XIII taught, God gave Joseph the Blessed Virgin as spouse and made him the guardian of the Son of God. What an awe-inspiring dignity!

❤️ And here’s a beautiful consolation: Even if you don’t feel a strong personal devotion to St. Joseph yet… the moment you truly love and honor Mary, you are already living a Josephine devotion at its core.

St. Teresa of Ávila, who loved him dearly, said you cannot truly love Jesus and Mary without also loving the Holy Patriarch.

Saint Joseph, first devotee of the Blessed Virgin, chaste guardian of the Redeemer, and Patron of the Universal Church — pray for us!

Help us follow your humble, silent example so we may lead more souls to Mary, and through her, to Jesus. 🙏
Amen.
