Observing Your Wife’s Beautiful Manners

In every marriage, there may be moments of frustration. But a just and grateful heart does not allow one or two shortcomings to eclipse the many beautiful qualities Allaah has placed in one’s spouse.

Before dwelling on what irritates you, pause and reflect: her patience, loyalty, care, sacrifices, kindness, and the countless ways she brings goodness into your home. Often, what is good is far greater than what is difficult.

Ibn Sa‘dee رحمه الله reminds us that focusing only on faults is a form of injustice. Strong companionship is nurtured when we recognise goodness, overlook minor mistakes, and choose gratitude over constant criticism.

Do not let a small flaw make you blind to a great blessing.

May Allaah place mercy, fairness, appreciation, and tranquillity in our marriages. Aameen.

This is an incredibly beautiful reflection on the founding values of this country. As a man whose great-grandfathers fought for the independence of this nation—sacrificing their blood and putting their lives and families on the line—I am honored to say that I am an American.

Am I disillusioned with what America has become recently? Absolutely. I believe the principles America was founded upon are some of the highest values in the Western world, but have we been living up to them lately? Sadly, no.

There is still so much that is good about this country and its people, but we have lost our way. We have lost touch with the true meaning of the values encapsulated in our founders' writings. Somewhere along the line, we have allowed those with an agenda to divide, control, and conquer within these borders to lead us astray.

I want to echo what my dear friend Rich Matthews is saying, and support what Context Corner is pushing to put out: pushing back on the narrative that seeks to divide us, sow fear, and breed dissension. That is an agenda that isn't truly American, and it doesn't represent the best values this country was built upon.

So, we celebrate Independence. We celebrate Liberty wherever we find it—in whichever heart, whichever home, and whichever faith. I firmly believe, and I'm sure Rich would agree, that people who hold these values are the majority. We need to push back against the tide of hate and division being peddled by a very vocal minority, and show the world—and ourselves—what America truly stands for.

Reciting with Awareness, Healing from Affliction:

وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

And [remember] Job, when he cried unto his Lord: ‘Affliction has seized me. But You are the Most Merciful of the merciful’ [Q.21:83]

Ibn al-Qayyim, while teasing out the benefits and spiritual fruits of the verse, noted:

‘This supplication (du‘a) combines in itself the essence of tawhid, manifesting indigence before the Lord, the taste of divine love in the praise and the flattery of Him, affirming His attribute of mercy and that He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, seeking the means to approach Him through [mention] of His attributes, and one’s dire need of Him. Whenever the afflicted one feels this, his affliction will be removed. Experience confirms that whoever repeats this [verse] seven times, especially with this awareness, God shall lift from him his affliction.’1

It was a hard decision, and not without its own heartbreak 💔 and fear 😨, but in the end it was a necessary one.
