In every game we do during our sports outreach, every run, and every moment shared under the open sky, children find a kind of joy that needs no invitation. It grows naturally, freely, and without limits.

These games bring together children who might otherwise never have the chance to hear the Word of God, and for many, it is their first opportunity to listen, learn, and pray.

Games are a language every Malawian boy and girl already spreaks and through them, we share joy, healing, and love.

In Mark 6, Jesus looks at a crowd of about five thousand hungry people.

The disciples suggest sending them away, but Jesus responds, “You give them something to eat.”

He could have acted alone, but instead He takes a small boy’s lunch, five loaves and two fish, and through His disciples, uses it to feed the crowd.

That moment reflects the work of every nutrition effort: great need, small resources, and a God who multiplies.

In Malawi today, the need is still great. Our resources are small. But we still believe what is placed in His hands becomes enough.

Many children in Malawi are living with undetected malnutrition.

Too often, cases are only identified when they have become critical and require emergency care. Yet this does not have to be the case, malnutrition can be prevented and treated early, before a child’s condition becomes life-threatening.

Through our programs, we are working to identify and treat children earlier, but the need remains great.

Help us reach more children in time. Help us prevent malnutrition before it becomes fatal, and give every child a healthier chance at life.

Around 3 in every 100 children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition. Without timely intervention, they are nine times more likely to die before their fifth birthday compared to well-nourished children.

Through our work in Malawi, we bring nutrition services closer to children in need.

During community-based nutrition assessments, we identify children at risk especially those in the red zone following MUAC screening and immediately initiate treatment with RUTF.

This early intervention helps restore health, prevent deterioration, and give children a stronger chance at life.

This day reminds us of the brave children we meet everyday at our outreaches fighting to survive, be healthy and have bright futures. Their courage continues to inspire us to create a world where every child in Malawi is free from Malnutrition.

Every child deserves access to quality health, ,protection and the chance to reach their full potential.

As we mark this day, we recommit ourselves to listening to children, investing in their futures, and ensuring that no child is left behind.

Because when we empower children, we shape a stronger Africa for generations to come.

Why does a nutrition charity own footballs?

It is a fair question. The answer is that the Gospel does not travel in a vacuum, and neither does our work.

Sports Outreaches are the part of PB+J that most surprises new supporters. We pack a truck with footballs, sound equipment and a stack of Bibles, and we drive out to a village on a Saturday morning.

We play. We preach. We pray. We share educational items.

Football is not a side ministry. It is how the Word becomes flesh in our corner of Malawi.

In Luke 15, Jesus tells a story about a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to look for one.

It is a strange story. By any economic measure it is bad maths. Why risk the safety of the many for the recovery of one? Why backtrack? Why not call it a loss and move on?

We think about this passage often in our follow-up programme.

By the time a child is on her third RUTF visit, the most exciting moments of her recovery are usually over. The dramatic improvement happens early. The visits in the middle are quieter. Many programmes drop off here. Many donors do too.

We stay because Jesus stayed. The shepherd does not return when finding the sheep is exciting. He returns because the sheep belongs to him.

Every follow-up visit is, in its own small way, a re-enactment of Luke 15. We go back. We count. We carry. We rejoice when the green band holds steady.

This is what it looks like to love a child the way the Father loves us not in a moment, but for the long haul.

Before a single sachet of RUTF leaves our shelves, we measure.

A nutrition assessment is the first and most important act of love in our work. Without it, we are guessing. With it, we are responding to exactly what a child needs.

Here is what one nutrition assessment actually does:
▶️ It catches malnutrition early, when treatment is short, cheap and almost always successful.
▶️It identifies severe cases that need urgent hospital care. Last quarter, we found 3.
▶️It teaches every caregiver, by hand, how to read their own child’s MUAC tape. That knowledge does not leave when we do.
▶️It opens a door. A mother who allows us to measure her child today often welcomes us back next week. Trust grows tape by tape.

Most nutrition programmes count children at the front door. We count them at the back.

Anyone can hand out food. The question that has always interested us is harder: did the child actually recover? Did the family stay safe? Did the change last?

That is what our follow-up programme exists to answer. Every two weeks for the length of treatment, our team returns to the same village, finds the same family, and re-measures the same child. We do not call this “monitoring.” We call it walking with people.

Around 1 in 5 children who initially improve will slide backwards without sustained support. Follow-ups catch that before it becomes a crisis.

Let's talk about the numbers because they tell us where the work is.

In Malawi today, malnutrition contributes to nearly half of all under-five deaths. Not as the named killer on the certificate, but as the quiet weakness that lets pneumonia, malaria, and diarrhoea finish the work.

And yet, this is the line that keeps us going. For roughly $40, one severely malnourished child can be carried all the way back to health.

The need is real. The solution is real. The bridge between them is people willing to act.
