Our Career Workshop today featured panelists from multiple disciplines, including education ✏️, healthcare 🩺, business 💼, finance 💰, engineering 👷🏻‍♂️, and tech 💻 - what a variety of skills and professions represented by our church body!

“I’m really grateful for the young adults who gave us practical and realistic insight into what our futures in the workplace might be. It was really valuable to hear about others’ experiences in the career that I’m pursuing and how they have both seen God’s design and pursued a life centered around the gospel while doing it.” - Hailey Ung, Class of 2024

This week, Pastor Matt took a look into the power of God's saving grace in Titus 2:11-14. In this passage, Paul gives us 3 provisions of God's saving grace in His past appearance, present training, and future hope.

We look back and reflect on God's saving work on the cross that motivates and empowers us to deny unrighteousness and live the godly lives He desires for us. It keeps our eyes focused on our hope to come in Christ's return, where we will experience even more grace to come.

Grace doesn't just save us, it transforms us. So let us continue to dwell on the grace we have recieved and be trained by it to live godly lives, zealously doing good works while we wait for our Savior's return.

“In light of our mini-series on financial stewardship, I want to recommend Randy Alcorn’s book – ‘Money Possessions & Eternity.’ In Matthew 6:19, our Lord Jesus said, ‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ Our finances are directly tied to our hearts so that how we spend, save, and invest our income guides our hearts toward the things of the kingdom. We must, therefore, be wise in how we think about money. Alcorn’s book will teach you the biblical principles surrounding subjects like debt, savings, materialism, charity, and missions. May you strive to become a faithful stewards of your King’s treasures.”

As we continue on the topic of how to steward our finances, we learned about the roots of giving in Old Testament tithing. Tithing was a means of national worship; the Israelites were commanded to give to the tribe of Levi, to the poor, and for festivals. Ultimately, the act of tithing was a matter of worship and thanksgiving, returning to God what was His.

As Christians now we no longer need to tithe because Christ has fulfilled the Old Testament law in its entirity. However, this now frees us to give not according to these laws but out of the love and thankfulness we have to the one who has purchased our lives with the greatest price.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

Baptism, Living Water, and the Holy Spirit [Selected Passages]

We continued our study of baptism by diving deep into its biblical theology to understand where the practice came from and why Jesus tells us to get baptized.

Christian baptism is a picture of our immersion with the Holy Spirit, in whom we find unity with the Son, in his death and resurrection.

We baptize by water because the Holy Spirit is symbolized by water, linked back to the life-giving water in the Garden of Eden. Water not only gives life, but is representive of the cleansing and washing needed to enter the temple in the Old Testament.

So spirit baptism is a hallmark of new creation, as we are given new life and cleansed by the Holy Spirit. While baptism is not what saves us, it is a sign of obedience to the one who has cleansed and washed away our sins.

Christians are called to be baptized once they have decided to dedicate their lives to Jesus, as a public proclamation of faith and renouncement of the old life, dead in sin. However, there are a number of reasons why people avoid getting baptized - ignorance to the importance of baptism, indifference, shame from being a long time believer, disobedience, or they’re unregenerate and not saved. Baptism does not equate salvation but is a natural progression that results from the joy of receiving salvation. We are saved by grace through faith, and baptism can symbolize how we are united with the Son of God, who through his death (submersion) and resurrection (resurfacing) has conquered hell, and washed us of our sins.

New year, means new books from 📚 We’re launching off the year with “Reframing Foster Care” by Jason Johnson.

“The author takes you on a journey through his personal experience with fostering. Bringing a child into your home is beautiful because it pushes you to care, protect, and provide with an intimate love that had only been known to your immediate family. At the same time, however, the ministry is hard because you’re bringing a child from a place of brokenness so that the fear, uncertainty, doubt, and frustration surrounding the child will overflow into your home. But both the beauty and the hardships of foster-care are powerful reflections of the Gospel. Jesus adopted us into His family when we were children of wrath and He accepted us with all our baggage, including our sin, by absorbing it all on the cross. The beauty of the Gospel is displayed through the pain. So may we strive to learn the love of Christ - a love that bears all things, endures all things, and hopes all things even if it comes at the expense of our comforts and securities. Even for those of us who may not plan to foster a child, I highly encourage you to still become familiar with the world of foster-care so that you might be able to come alongside those within our church who choose to minister in this way.”
