20 years ago today, 16th July 2006, we had our first gathering in Newport Beach, CA, having left Sydney the day before with a one-way ticket to LA.
Our mission was to plant a church in Orange County. We had no guarantees of success, no safety net; we simply stepped out in faith with a small group of Bible college students & a vision to plant a church that would be a hub of hope & faith in Southern California & beyond. We left our family, house, church, and community, knowing that Jesus would honor His promise to all who left family, home, & lands for the sake of the Kingdom.
One of our team recommended a venue, 2601 PCH, Newport Beach, Dennis Rodman’s old nightclub, on the water with velvet-lined walls, large gilded mirrors & Corinthian pillars.
The week before leaving Australia, as we were singing “None but Jesus” at Hillsong Conference, knowing that Brooke Fraser who wrote the song was in LA recording an Album & coming to our first gathering, I texted her & asked if she would sing it as our first song& a declaration that our church would be all about Jesus!
As we drove to the venue, I wondered if anyone would come on a hot Southern California day at 6:00pm. We had no social media or smartphones to promote the gathering, but 103 people turned up!
We were hosting an information night to gather momentum before an official launch date but it didn’t work out the way we had planned, because as soon as Brooke started to play, everyone stood & began to worship. Our information night turned into a worship night! I shared a short message, Chris Caine made a salvation appeal, three people responded, and our church was born!
20 years later, we can reflect on all the lives that have been touched & changed by God’s grace as a result. We’ve had many seasons that we’ve weathered, & through every new season, God has been faithful to lead & make a way for us.
A huge thank you to all who helped us build—from the very first days of pioneering. We love and appreciate you greatly & pray that God will bless & reward you all.
And most of all, we are excited about what the next 20 years will usher in for us all!
Happy 20th Birthday, Newport Church!
