10 Saints Everyone Should Know, #6

St. Patrick was a fifth-century Christian missionary and bishop who is best known as the patron saint of Ireland. As a teenager in Roman Britain, he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave. During those years, he turned deeply to prayer and faith. After six years, he escaped and returned home, but later felt called by God to return to Ireland as a missionary.

Patrick went back to the land where he had once been enslaved and spent the rest of his life sharing the Christian faith with the Irish people. He traveled widely, preaching, baptizing, and helping to establish churches and Christian communities. One famous tradition says he used the shamrock to help explain the idea of the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - as one God in three Persons.

Today, St. Patrick’s influence is seen in both religious and cultural ways. In the church, he is remembered as an example of forgiveness, courage, and faithful mission - even returning to a place of suffering to bring hope and healing. In wider culture, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations around the world often point to his legacy, even when they become more festive than religious. His life continues to inspire people to trust God through hardship, forgive others, and share their faith with courage and compassion.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL: Psalm 23:4 ~ “Even though I walk through the darkest valley,[a]I fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." I remember every detail of the day we lost our beloved choir leader, David, to a car accident. I remember the sorrow, the fear, and my thought that life is like this, one minute you're fine, the next you are gone, or someone you love is gone. It haunted me with this fear. I drove myself to God and his word. This passage reminds us that God is always present with us, in every moment of life, even in the last moments. We are immortal beings if we have accepted Christ as our Lord; leaving this life means we move on to eternal life and all that God has for us there. It isn't over; it changes and goes on in a different and frankly better way. To be in his presence face-to-face. To be in a perfected body completely whole. Praise Jesus for his sacrifice and love that removes all fear, even the fear of death! - take from The Upper Room publication

DAILY DEVOTIONAL: Acts 13:47 ~ “For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, ‘I have set you to be a light for the gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth." Early in my very busy life as a wife and mom, I met another young wife and Mother at a school event. We hit it off so fast that it felt like we had always known each other. As our friendship grew, she would invite me to events, concerts, and finally church. I hadn't been in years, but for her, I said yes. I am sure God's spirit was at work. She became my Barnabas, just like when he found Paul and brought him to Antioch. He planted Paul in a community that God was growing. Today, I pray you have memories of someone who drew you to, or back to God. I hope you have been that person for another. God is good! ~ taken from The Upper Room publication.

10 Saints Everyone Should Know, #5

Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582), also known as Teresa of Jesus, was a Spanish nun, writer, and mystic who played a major role in reforming the Carmelite order within the Catholic Church. Born in Ávila, Spain, she entered a Carmelite convent as a young woman and later worked to restore a stricter, more contemplative form of religious life. She founded numerous reformed convents that emphasized poverty, simplicity, prayer, and spiritual discipline.

Teresa is best known for her spiritual writings, especially "The Interior Castle" and "The Way of Perfection," which explore the soul’s journey toward a closer relationship with God through prayer and self-understanding. Her writings are regarded as classics of Christian mysticism and Spanish literature. Canonized in 1622, she was later declared a Doctor of the Church for her major contributions to theology and spirituality.

Today, St. Teresa of Ávila continues to influence Christians and spiritual seekers around the world through her teachings on prayer, mindfulness, inner growth, and perseverance. Her works are widely studied in theology, literature, and history, and her example inspires many people seeking a deeper spiritual life.

She is often depicted writing in a book using a quill. This image conveys Teresa’s belief that her writings were divinely inspired through prayer.
