Luke 9 closes with Jesus’ second description of what it means to be his disciple. Those who follow Jesus must understand that he has no place to lay his head on his journey to Jerusalem. They must be ready to drop everything and follow him by proclaiming God’s coming Kingdom because the time is now. There is no time to bury dead relatives or delay by turning around and saying goodbye to family.
We have to be very careful not to pluck Jesus’ words out of their context and come up with all sorts of weird ways to apply this description of discipleship. The urgency to follow Jesus in Luke 9:57-62 is that he is headed toward his death in Jerusalem NOW. This moment is unique in all of history. If Jesus’ followers are not ready to go now, they will miss their opportunity to prepare the way for Jesus by proclaiming the coming kingdom. They will miss accompanying Jesus to the cross and witnessing the culmination of God’s plan to rescue humanity from sin, death, and the grave.
So, Jesus is not saying that discipleship is about not having a home, missing out on a family member’s funeral, or neglecting to say goodbye to friends and family. Instead, Jesus is warning us that there are urgent moments when he calls us. His call upon our lives to follow him as Savior and Lord is meant to disrupt us, to wake us up to the reality that the Kingdom of God is present now, and we are in danger of missing it. Are we ready to obey at a moment’s notice, or will we find ourselves unprepared and filled with excuses for why the time cannot be now? How do we make sure we are prepared when Jesus calls?
