Jesus has begun his journey toward the cross in Jerusalem and shifted his focus to teaching his disicples what it means to be his disciple by accompanying him on this journey. Following and being with Jesus means taking up one’s cross and being like Jesus. It involves sharing his kingdom blessing centered on love with everyone, welcoming everyone to God’s table to share in his goodness. As Jesus travels, he sends 72 disciples ahead of him in pairs to prepare the people for his arrival. These disciples are to bring peace and boldly proclaim the ushering in of God’s kingdom. We, too, are called to be disicples who spread the good news of God’s kingdom. We are to be like Jesus and to share his love, light, and life in tangible ways with those around us. How might people experience the good news of God’s kingdom through you today?

Luke 9 closes with Jesus’ second description of what it means to be his disciple. Those who follow Jesus must understand that he has no place to lay his head on his journey to Jerusalem. They must be ready to drop everything and follow him by proclaiming God’s coming Kingdom because the time is now. There is no time to bury dead relatives or delay by turning around and saying goodbye to family.

We have to be very careful not to pluck Jesus’ words out of their context and come up with all sorts of weird ways to apply this description of discipleship. The urgency to follow Jesus in Luke 9:57-62 is that he is headed toward his death in Jerusalem NOW. This moment is unique in all of history. If Jesus’ followers are not ready to go now, they will miss their opportunity to prepare the way for Jesus by proclaiming the coming kingdom. They will miss accompanying Jesus to the cross and witnessing the culmination of God’s plan to rescue humanity from sin, death, and the grave.

So, Jesus is not saying that discipleship is about not having a home, missing out on a family member’s funeral, or neglecting to say goodbye to friends and family. Instead, Jesus is warning us that there are urgent moments when he calls us. His call upon our lives to follow him as Savior and Lord is meant to disrupt us, to wake us up to the reality that the Kingdom of God is present now, and we are in danger of missing it. Are we ready to obey at a moment’s notice, or will we find ourselves unprepared and filled with excuses for why the time cannot be now? How do we make sure we are prepared when Jesus calls?

The story of the paralyzed man and his four friends who go to radical lengths to get to Jesus to receive help, forgiveness, and healing is rich with depth and meaning. Luke emphasizes that it is the religious leaders who are gathered tightly around Jesus to learn from him. Their desire is good; however, they have become so caught up in learning about Jesus that they effectively turn their backs on those outside their circle who are broken and hurting. In their pursuit of knowledge, they effectively block access to those needing to experience Christ’s love most. It’s a convicting scene. May we never lose sight of what it means to follow Jesus. Learning about him is great, but it is all for nothing if it does not lead us to become like him as a result of what we have learned.

When Jesus visited his hometown of Nazareth, his time there was explosive and ended with the people he grew up with trying to throw him off a cliff. The vision of God’s kingdom he shared with them included people they considered their enemies, and they didn’t like the thought of God showing mercy to their oppressors. If we’re honest, we struggle to show love to all the people God loves because some people are different from us, have hurt us, or are difficult to love. However, joining God in his kingdom work will call us out of our comfort zone and challenge us to see others as he sees them. While following Jesus on his way of self-giving love isn’t easy, it is simple. How will you respond to God’s call to love others, even those you find most difficult to love?

Did you know the story of Jesus’ baptism and testing in the wilderness focuses heavily on identity? What we believe about ourselves and who we believe ourselves to be matters greatly and affects our lives in significant ways. It is telling that the devil immediately challenges Jesus’ identity as the beloved Son of the Father when he tempts him. Do you know who you are in God’s eyes, and do you live like you believe it?
