This page aims to provide information about the patron Saint of Filandari, Santa Marina Vergine, and the traditions that have followed her to the US in the 20th Century. It is a great place to find information on the upcoming feast, the schedule of masses/novenas and details on the festival itself. We also encourage family members and children of Filandari to join the Society to help continue this beautiful tradition in bringing forth the mass, procession, and feast each year.

Happy Mother's Day!

Loving God,
We thank you for the love
of the mothers you have
given us, whose love is so
precious that it can never
be measured, whose patience
seems to have no end.
We pray for those mothers
who fear they will run out
of love or time, or patience.
We ask you to bless them
with your own special love.
Amen.

Today, we celebrate Palm Sunday, the day our Lord, Jesus Christ, entered Jerusalem in humility and peace, greeted by crowds waving palm branches and proclaiming, “Hosanna!” It is a moment of joy and reverence, but also the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred time in the Catholic Church.

As we enter this solemn and beautiful week, we are called to walk alongside Christ, from His triumphant entry, through His Passion, and ultimately to the glory of His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. It is a time for reflection, prayer, and deep gratitude for His sacrifice and boundless love. Let us carry the spirit of Palm Sunday in our hearts, welcoming Christ into our lives with faith, humility, and devotion.

Pray with us:

Heavenly Father,
As we begin this Holy Week, help us to walk in the path of Your Son.
Grant us hearts that are humble, minds that are faithful, and spirits that are devoted to Your will.
May we remember Christ’s sacrifice and grow closer to You each day.
Bless our families, our community, and all those in need.
We welcome You, Lord, with open hearts.
Hosanna in the highest.
Amen.

Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful and blessed Holy Week.

A touching story of the beautiful Italian tradition of January 6th, "La Befana".
In many parts of Italy, (and some other countries as well) gift-giving takes place on Epiphany, January 6. In Italy it typically includes the figure if an ‘Old Lady,’ named Befana. Her name may be a cognate of the word “epiphania.”
The story goes that, the Magi, following the Star and on their way to find the Christ Child, stayed one night at the home of a hard-working elderly woman, Befana. She took wonderful care of the travelers. Her house was so clean, and she cooked them a marvelous meal. They told her where they were going, to find the Divine Child, to pay Him homage and give Him their gifts. They invited Befana to accompany them to the Christ, but she was busy sweeping the house and carrying out the chores, and explained that she had too many other things to do.
After the Wise Men left, Bafana began to regret her decision. The legend says that she gathered many gifts and she left her house, still with her broom in hand. She would spend all her life searching for this special Child. On Epiphany, Befana gives gifts to children, always hoping that one of the children she sees, and to whom she gives a gift, will be the Christ Child.
Often Befana – an old woman with a broom – is represented as a witch or a comical character. I like to think of her as a good, hard-working woman, who, like us all at times, got too absorbed in her work. She missed her opportunity to follow after the Incarnate Lord, but now serves God in generous charity, by giving what she has to those she encounters, knowing that in so doing, she honors Jesus Christ Himself.

Today, January 6th, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, commemorating the visit of the Magi who followed the star to Bethlehem to adore the Christ Child. In this holy feast, the Church proclaims the manifestation of Jesus as Savior of all nations, revealed not only to Israel but to the entire world. As we honor this sacred day, may we be reminded to seek Christ faithfully, to offer Him the gifts of our hearts, and to let His divine light guide our lives in faith, hope, and love.

Today, on All Souls’ Day, we turn our hearts toward all our loved ones who have gone before us. We remember our family, friends, and faithful souls now resting in God’s peace.

Since the earliest days of the Church, believers have gathered to pray for those who have died, entrusting them to the mercy of our loving Father. We remember them not with sorrow alone, but with the hope that through Christ’s promise of eternal life, we will one day be reunited in His heavenly kingdom.

As we light candles and offer prayers, we also honor the faith and traditions passed down through generations. Here in our community of Filandari, guided by our beloved Santa Marina, we give thanks for those who built our families, taught us to believe, and filled our homes with love.

May our prayers bring comfort to the departed and strengthen the bond that unites heaven and earth, the communion of saints, and souls forever in God’s care.

🙏 Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Today we celebrate All Saints’ Day, a time to honor all those who gave their lives in faith and love for Jesus Christ These saints continue to guide and inspire us from heaven. Today, we pause to honor our patron Saint, Santa Marina.

From the earliest days of Christianity, followers of Christ would gather each year to remember their brothers and sisters who were martyred for their faith. On the anniversary of their passing, they prayed together, often at the very place where those faithful souls had entered eternal life. These believers knew that those who gave their lives for Christ were carried by angels into the presence of God, to see His face and live in His everlasting light. We continue to believe this today.
We especially honor our Santa Marina, patron saint of Filandari. Her courage, devotion, and steadfast love for God continue to shine brightly in our hearts and in the beautiful family traditions she inspires. Through her example, we are reminded to walk in faith, to serve with compassion, and to trust in God’s grace even through trials.

As we celebrate this sacred day, may Santa Marina intercede for all of us. We pray that she continues to protect our families, strengthen our faith, and keeping our community united in love.

Santa Marina, pray for us.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our most cherished members of the Santa Marina Society of Inwood, Marino Artusa, a man whose decades of selfless service, deep compassion, and unwavering dedication to our community will never be forgotten. His love for the traditions surrounding Santa Marina of Filandari was matched only by his love for his family and friends. A devoted great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and friend, he always put others before himself, offering kindness and empathy to all who crossed his path.

He now joins his beloved wife Rosa in eternal rest. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life well-lived, one that touched so many. He will be deeply missed by all of us.

May perpetual light shine upon him, and may his soul rest in peace.
