What happens when a beloved gathering place needs some care? At St. Columba’s in Inverness, a $5,000 grant to repair the amphitheater stairs became something much bigger: a community-wide labor of love. What emerged wasn’t simply a safer staircase, but a renewed place for theater, music, conversation, children, neighbors, and the wider West Marin community.

It’s a beautiful story about stewardship and about what can happen when we understand church property not simply as something we maintain, but as something we share. And just in time for another season of gathering under the stars.

What if prayer didn’t always require words? Our Praying in Color: The Great Mystics series continues on September 8 at 3:30 as part of our Weekly Contemplative Practice Circle.

Together, we’re exploring the lives and wisdom of the great teachers of the Christian contemplative tradition, and discovering ways to pray with them through color, image, symbol, and attentive presence.

Join us for Wednesday Evening Meditation, a weekly gathering rooted in contemplative Christianity and shaped by the wisdom of the Christian mystical tradition. Together we practice silence, reflection, prayer, and attentive presence.

On a summer evening, it's easy to sit in the amphitheater and imagine it has always been part of St. Columba's. Built in 1966, like much of the campus, it began with a vision and the dedication of community members.

One of the people who helped shape the amphitheater was Jack Mason, a local historian and longtime member of St. Columba's. Over the years, Jack served multiple times as both Senior and Junior Warden and contributed significantly to the life of the church and the wider Inverness community.

The Amphitheater first housed the Inverness Music Festival in 1966. Today, the amphitheater hosts concerts, summer Shakespeare performances, and celebrations. It has become a beloved space on the property. What makes it especially meaningful is that it reflects something larger about St. Columba's. Many of the places people enjoy today exist because someone imagined what could be, and then rolled up their sleeves to help make it happen.

The amphitheater is not just a venue. It's a reminder that communities are built one vision, one project, and one generation at a time.
