CAF (Culture Animal Foundation) awarded a grant to Lester B. Jordan for his project, “SPCA Animal Community Kinship Art Garden.” 1 of 14 grantees of the 658 applications from 89 countries.
The SPCA Community Animal Kinship Art Garden is a community-driven public art and humane education project transforming a long-neglected vacant lot in Detroit’s Cody Rouge neighborhood into a vibrant, permanent green space. Led by artist and educator Lester B. Jordan, the project is a partnership between Weaver Community Arts Inc., Weaver Fine Art Creatives LLC, the Southfield Plymouth Community Association (all members of the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance) . . . and now CAF.
The Art Garden will feature animal-themed sculptures, community-painted panels, storytelling signage, and small wildlife habitat elements celebrating the deer, birds, cats, and urban wildlife that share the neighborhood. Alongside the permanent installation, hands-on workshops will engage residents (especially youth) in humane values education, animal stewardship, and collaborative art-making.
