OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AND
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost!
Week of October 23 – 29, 2022

The Reverend Jeffrey Snell, Interim Pastor
“The Spirit of God is Poured Out”

Old Testament – Joel 2:23-32
New Testament – Luke 18:9-14

Worship Theme

Joel describes a God for all people, especially the marginalized. If anyone would seem to be punished by God, it would be a slave. Joel does not see it that way. God will pour out the Spirit on slaves just as God pours out the Spirit on everyone else. The empires of this world deny this reality. For them, God is only found among the rich, healthy, and prosperous. This is a different God than Joel describes and a different gospel than Jesus preaches. Joel’s words come resounding back to us: there is no other. When we substitute prosperity and empire for the God of Israel, we are ultimately worshiping idols.

The new covenant that God gives the people will be written on the heart rather than on stone tablets. To take the covenant on the heart represents the willing acceptance of teachings, rather than having these teachings imposed on them. God invites all people into this covenant relationship.

“The Faith of Gratitude”
Old Testament – 2 Kings 5:1-3, 7-15c
New Testament – Luke 17:11-19

WORSHIP THEME
Through a face-to-face experience with Jesus, a group of lepers are seen, heard, received, and sent. They obtained a kind of transformative and complete healing that seemed impossible beforehand. Whether blindness or illness, abject poverty, or criminality, walking with Jesus in this way provides an all-encompassing healing that reflects God’s vision of justice, wellness, and belonging for all of humanity.

“Seeing Our Neighbors”
Old Testament – Amos 6:1, 4-7
New Testament – Luke 16:19-31

WORSHIP THEME
“This parable is a continuation of the parables that begin in Luke chapter 15. In the stories of grace in chapter 15, no one – not even the rich – is left out. But grace, even God’s free grace, does not mean we can turn a blind eye to our faults. Let’s be honest: much of America enjoys comparative economic comfort, and our culture gives us plenty of ways to indulge ourselves. So whatever judgment this parable offers to the rich, to the lovers of money, it potentially offers us as well.”

“Who Is Your Master”
Old Testament – Jeremiah 8:18 – 9:1
New Testament – Luke 16:1-13

WORSHIP THEME:
In a complicated text about wealth and honesty, we can look at the final verse for clarity. Devotion to God and faithfulness in stewarding God’s gifts is the priority for a follower of Jesus. But it is never easy in a world where we have competing loyalties. Recognition of this challenge leads us again to depend on Christ to reconcile us with God and with one another.

Evangelism Sunday Observed by PCUSA

Through the Evangelism and Church Growth ministry, we are called as disciples to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, grow in discipleship and respond in commitment to God’s mission. 2 Corinthians 2:1–17 is both an encouraging and a challenging passage. God chooses to use you and me to tell others about Jesus Christ through our words, actions, and lives. Evangelism Sunday is a time when we are reminded of our equal responsibility to live as Christ did, so that we draw others to God. Pray for one another! evangelism-sunday-2014-with-engage.pdf (pcusa.org)

THE REVEREND JEFFREY SNELL

“From Grumbling to Rejoicing”

Old Testament – Psalm 51:1-10 (NRSV)
New Testament – Luke 15:1-10 (NRSV)

WORSHIP THEME:

Is there a correct way of doing evangelism? A lot of us have been turned off by inappropriate and obnoxious forms of evangelism, so we neglect it all together. We get tired of hearing that we do not adhere to a certain set of beliefs, we will not be saved. However, reaching lost people was a huge priority for Jesus. But how do we reach these people without turning them away? Jesus said his primary mission in life was to reach lost people and that is the theme of today’s passage in Luke.

New Testament – Luke 14:25-33 (NRSV)

Welcome and Introduction of Pastor Jeffrey Snell
“This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!” Today, we have special meaning in our rejoicing as we welcome our new Interim Pastor, Rev. Jeffrey Snell to our pulpit. This morning marks the ending of a long search for the right someone to hold the hand of Jesus as he guides our church into a new beginning. Reverend Snell has bravely accepted the challenge, and we begin our journey today by sharing Holy Communion to further consecrate this special day. God bless you, Reverend Snell; God has surely blessed us with your presence. Welcome to our Congregation!

WORSHIP THEME:
God has created each of us for God’s purpose. God is our loving parent. God molds us to how God wants us to be. God’s eyes are never taken off us. God is the potter, and we are the clay. God’s intense interest is in us. God never takes His eyes off us. We are the clay, and our destiny is in the hands of the potter.

“God’s Perfect Peace”

Old Testament – Isaiah 9:6-7
New Testament -- John 14:1-4, 23-28

In the midst of fires, floods and famine...peace; in the midst of broken hearts and broken homes…peace; in the midst of confusion, chaos, and conflict yet more peace. In the midst of this and so much more God said, “Peace I leave you, My Peace I give to you.” How can that be so?

“The Empowering Inheritance of Faith”

Old Testament -- Jeremiah 23:23-29
New Testament -- Hebrews 11:29-12:2

WORSHIP THEME:

By faith, “We have the power those who came before us have given us, to move beyond the place where they were standing. We have the trees, and water, and sun, and our children. Malcolm X does not live in the dry texts of his words as we read them; he lives in the energy we generate and use to move along the visions we share with him. We are making the future as well as bonding to survive the enormous pressures of the present, and that is what it means to be a part of history.”

By faith “…we have, built into all of us, old blueprints of expectation and response, old structures of oppression, and these must be altered at the same time as we alter the living conditions which are a result of those structures. For the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house.” ~ Audre Lorde

By faith we are called to look beyond what we see. We are called to a Sankofa moment of looking back to bring forward what is life-giving to give us hope, courage, strength, grace, mercy, and love to survive the pressures of the present and see ourselves in the future.

“Keep Your Eyes on the Prize”

OT: Psalm 33:20-22
NT: Philippians 3:14

Looking unto Jesus keeps us going. We can get discouraged in the spiritual race. People let us down. They disappoint us. They don’t appreciate our hard work. They don’t see our efforts. They don’t see our real motives. They criticize us. But we say, “I’m not running for you. I’m running for the Lord, and I’ll keep going.” We have to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ. Our prize is the crown of righteousness that He will give to us. That is why we live the Christian life. That is why we try to reach people for Him. It is not for applause. It isn’t for notoriety. It is so we can hear Jesus say to us on that final day, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” If this were your last day on Earth, would you be able to say with the apostle Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7 NKJV)? Would you have any regrets?
